The Open Source Awards is an annual online event held by Packt Publishing to distinguish excellence among Open Source projects.
Now in its fifth year, the Award, formerly known as the Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Award, is designed to encourage, support, recognize and reward not only CMSes but a wider range of Open Source projects.
The Awards are split up into two main stages. Firstly, nominations will begin on August 9. This is your chance to put forward your favorite Open Source project in each category to go through to the final stage of voting. The top five projects with the most nominations in each category will go through to the final stage of voting. The nominations will end on September 17.
The five finalists in each category will be announced and voting will begin on September 27. Voting will close on November 5, with the winners announced the week commencing November 15.
You will also be pleased to hear that by nominating or voting for your favorite Open Source project, you will have chances to win a fantastic Amazon Kindle! This is an opportunity for you to download all your favorite Packt eBooks and read them from one handy device. During each stage, a randomly chosen nominator or voter will be drawn out of the hat. To ensure you have a chance of winning, nominate from August 9 and vote from September 27.
From August 9, you are invited to submit a nomination for an Open Source Project to be put forward to the final voting stage in each category. The following categories make up the 2010 Open Source Awards.

2010 Open Source Awards Rules

Only nominations for Open Source Content Management Systems, E-Commerce Applications, Graphic Software and JavaScript Libraries available on one of the Open Source licenses, will be counted.

Only one nomination per person, per category will be counted.

The five Open Source projects with the most nominations will go through to the final in each category, apart from the Hall of Fame CMS category, which is open only to the winners of the Overall CMS Award in previous years.

An Open Source project cannot win the Open Source CMS or the Hall of Fame CMS and win the Most Promising CMS category. These must be won by different Open Source projects.

Previous winners of the Overall CMS Award are not eligible for the Open Source CMS category in 2010. Previous winners compete amongst one another in the separate Hall of Fame CMS category designed specifically for them.

The Most Promising Open Source Project category is open for Open Source projects that first release was under two years ago as of August 9, 2010, available on an Open Source license. Projects that entered the 2009 Most Promising CMS category, that are still eligible for the 2010 Most Promising Open Source projects category are invited to enter.

During the final voting stage, only one vote per person will be counted.

The top three will be voted for by a panel of judges. A final vote will come from the results of a public vote on www.PacktPub.com

Category award winners will be decided on a points basis. The project that the judges and public have voted as the number one will be awarded three points. The second placed project will receive two points and the third placed project will receive one point. The project with the highest number of points overall will be declared the winner.

In the event of a tie, an extra independent judge will be brought in.

All judges are independent and their decision is final.

Packt Publishing has no influence, input or say in the finalists or winners of any Award category.

Each winner of the Amazon Kindle will be chosen at random and will be contacted directly by Packt.
