Hallo Multichill,
[edit] Deletion of "dudeism"
Hello Multichill, I am a newbe and created a term "dudeism" which is a religion. "SemperBlotto", I feel, did not properly research it and his "own opinion" deleted it for the reason of that it was "stupid". After I creating it, I tried to capitalize it but couldn't. So in way I'm glat that is deleted so I can start over. Dudeism is real. Check out the movie "Big Lebowski" with Jeff Bridges as the "The Dude". A religion was formed in America back in 2005 and has over 80,000 members. It fact the term "Dudeism" is on Wikipedia. I checked out SemperBlotto's page and it seems he has done this before. In his bio, he seems like he is a cool Dude himself but after this, I'm not sure. I hope you are a Dude and with the name Multichill, I'm sure:) Please check out the situation so I continue to contribute. Thank You. User: urbanhistorian/Julius George, Easton, Maryland,U.S.A.

[edit] further images of Earlham, St. Mary's Church?
I was wondering if you had any further images of the interior of Earlham, St. Mary's Church. I am trying to get an image of a Waller family memorial that exists near the altar. The image would have a shield like:

If you can help out, please send me a note at [email protected]
Thanks...

[edit] Capaccio
Hi Multichill, Im sure that User talk:Dr.T is a sockpuppet of the nl.wp user Capaccio. With File:Lumbriculus variegatus.jpg I assume that it is an accident although I cant believe that he, with many years expirience, not knows that NC means unfree. However, with some other uploads he simply grabbed images from the internet and declared them his "own work". Thats something new users or some sockpuppeteers do, but for an bureaucrat and sysop this kind of behaviour is not acceptable. Its the second time already, last time I silently blocked User talk:Quatrostein, this time I need someone to speek with him. Can you? --Martin H. (talk) 10:02, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- p.s.: Please see Special:Undelete/File:Jelle_Vossen.png for reference. --Martin H. (talk) 10:30, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Are you 100% these three users are the same? Was this confirmed by a checkuser? If so, this would be really bad. I'll wait for your response before I talk with him (I am boarding an 8 hour flight now anyway). Multichill (talk) 10:37, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- To make sure and do not make a mistake with this accusation: Besides the (expandable) evidences outlined in Special:Undelete/File:Jelle_Vossen.png I can confirm with a quick Checkuser and without any doubt that this accounts are the same user. User talk:Quatrostein was not confirmed by a checkuser but by nl:Overleg_gebruiker:Capaccio/archief03#Kwartnoten. I wish you a good and save flight, there is no hurry with this question. --Martin H. (talk) 10:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi there, I think it might be good that I give some explanation here. I can confirm that Quatrostein and Dr.T are former accounts of me (Capaccio), of which the first one was blocked permanently. The second one I used for uploading chemical reactions and pictures. The account Capaccio was made when I globally lock in to the system. I use it now to upload pictures that I made totally by meself. - Capaccio (talk) 16:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- The two uploads I made this morning where a terrible mistake: I simply selected the wrong ones for the upload. Those who are uploaded now are (I assume) copyrighted, so they have to be removed! This was absolutely not my intention! I know that in the past I made those mistakes too (under the name Quatrostein). I want seriously to apoglogize for this unfortunate mistake! This is a blame for an experienced user as me. - Capaccio (talk) 17:07, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- should I start searching for some of the older photographs by Dr.T? Actually I did, e.g. those photo of the Happy-Face Spider. You not yet cleaned out those copyviouploads. A mistake? From April 19 you used your SUL account, you not longer used the Dr.T account - except for recent soccer player photos. For using Dr.T and uploading you need to log-out and log-in again. Thats not an accident. I'd prefer if you care for removing all unfree images and stop this. --Martin H. (talk) 20:01, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Bundesarchiv images
I have used seven pictures from the Bundesarchiv on a webpage. I downloaded them to my own server for response time, but have not modified them in any way. I even kept the original file names, the alt tags, and title tags. http://www.acepilots.com/ships/graf-zeppelin.html But rather than link each individual picture file, I included a link to Wikimedia and Creative Commons underneath the images. Does this comply?
I'm note really a Wikipedia expert. I'm just a webmaster who would like to use some images in the right way. I posted this question also at the Bundesarchiv Commons page. Please forgive me if double-posting or anything else I have done is an error or violation of Wikipedia community standards and practices.

Hello. One parameter in the table header template was changed. Just in case. --Renessaince (talk) 14:32, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
[edit] pywiki question
Hi Multichill,
I've been playing around with your download_WLM.py script and came across something weird which I was wondering if you could explain. When running it with the "-imagelinks" argument on the page User:L_PBot/CoA/test it seems to pick up 7 rather than 6 images. Apart from the six images which it correctly identifies it also finds the extra image "Vapen.svg". This seems to be an artefact of the spaces in the other filenames since if I replace spaces by underscores it instead produces the extra image "Rsamling vapen.svg", i.e. it now picks up on the "ö" character instead. Just wondering if this is something you encountered when using either download_WLM.py or pagegenerator in general. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 16:48, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- Think I spotted it. Seems to be due to the "loose = True" parameter when the ImagesPageGenerator, in Pagegenerators, queries for imagelinks. /Lokal_Profil 17:20, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Geograph categories
Hi, I've noticed recently that BotMultichillT has been trying to find better categories for various Geograph images. However, what also seems to be happening is that a lot of images are appearing in categories of counties they definitely shouldn't be in! For example, if you look at Category:Isle of Wight, a lot of the images there were actually Geograph images taken in Hampshire that have, for some reason also been added to the Isle of Wight. I understand in some cases it's difficult to determine exactly some categories with crossing boundaries, but with the Isle of Wight, which clearly has definite boundaries surely this shouldn't be a problem? I was just wondering if there was anything that could be done to try and help, as I've recently been recategorising a lot of files, only to find a few days later that even more have been incorrectly categorised and added to Isle of Wight categories, which is taking up quite a lot of time to then recategorise. Thanks, Editor5807speak 00:02, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- You should probably have a look at Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph and the talk page. In short: It's the best we have and I don't have any time to improve it. Please continue any discussion about Geograph at the batch uploading page. Multichill (talk) 06:32, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Flickr batch uploading
Hi there, the other day, I added a couple of items to Commons:Flickr batch uploading. It lists you as one of the participants. Given that past requests have often been responded to on the same day, but there's been no reply to my requests, I was wondering whether I've missed something / done something wrong. I've also posted this message to user Zil. I haven't watchlisted your page (so if you reply here, please notify me with a talkback), but I do monitor the upload request pages. Thanks a lot. Schwede66 01:23, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hi again, one of my flickr batch upload jobs from early June is still open. Zil has had a few attempts, has asked a few times for me to do something, but since my last action (12 July) things have been silent. I see he or she hasn't been on Commons in a while. Would you mind having a look at some point? I know that we are all volunteers and hence I really appreciate you doing these kinds of jobs. I've now watchlisted your page, too, so a TB is not required. Schwede66 06:00, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Template:AntWeb permission
Hi Multichill. Are you 100% sure about this? I've been applying the tag en masse to files bearing the OTRS-pending tag for more than a month. Before some 30,000+ files are potentially deleted, I just wanted to double check with you that this tag was appropriate. -FASTILY (TALK) 09:01, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- My two cents worth: The website says "Copyright © 2002-2011. Use of this web site and information available from it is subject to our Attribution-Share Alike Creative Commons License. We encourage non-commercial use of ant web images. Each image must be attributed to its photographer and to www.antweb.org." The site clearly links to CC-BY-SA-3.0, they "encourage" non-commecial use but don't exclude it by license, as the commons project page states they used to have a non-commercial license (archive.org early 2009). The history and licensing are clear even if we never receive an OTRS email. --Tony Wills (talk) 12:01, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Ben.mq mentioned that you'd discussed File:BU West sign.JPG with him on IRC, and that you believe it meets threshold of originality. I don't, hence why I decided to upload it and a cropped version. I won't be able to actively join the discussion till later (just got back from vacation), but if you're willing to comment on the discussion here that would be awesomely cool. Thanks! Hi Multichill,
The Navy uploads seem to work quite well, providing us a continuous stream of new images.
If it's easy to do, you might want to change the date format and opt for the new section header format [2]. Personally, I'd remove the redundant parts as well [3]. Nothing major, but nice to have. -- Docu at 09:14, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Uncategorized
If I create new sub-categories under this category will they be ignored (ie will the bot mark files with only an "Uncategorized" category as "uncategorized" still) ? --Tony Wills (talk) 12:07, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you're asking and I don't understand what you're doing.
- Why did you create Category:Media needing categories as of September 2009?
- Why don't you remove Uncategorized when you categorize an image?
- Multichill (talk) 16:15, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- 1) Will your bot remove the uncategorized template just because it finds Category:Media needing categories as of September 2009 et al?
- 2) Cat-a-lot and other tools need a real category, and as no one was forthcoming with modifying cat-a-lot (to work with templated categories) or the categorization bot (to add real categories), other techniques have to be found :-).
- 3) Cat-a-lot doesn't know how to remove your templates, besides I don't consider images with only one general category to be properly categorized. I expect that sooner or later (perhaps when you do your hidden-cat bot run), your bot will pick up the fact that there are categories added. But I hope that will not be too soon as those images still need more work.
- What is the current number of uncategorized files (files marked with your template) ? --Tony Wills (talk) 12:14, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
- I am very happy that Cat-a-lot doesn't remove those templates. It happens all the time that we create or fill up a category by doing a quick search, such as Category:Wrought iron gates in the United Kingdom. Those side-category additions do not mean that the file categorisation should not be checked anymore. For stats: see User:Multichill/Categorization stats. --Foroa (talk) 12:35, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Template:UncategorizedHeader
Hello, you reverted my edit of this template. If you look into Category:Other speedy deletions, there isn't any "uncategorized" category. But if you look here, there are 2 empty categories (12 december 2008 and 5 may 2009) with "speedydelete" template on it's pages. So template "Speedydelete" build-in template UncategorizedHeader don't work correctly.--Honza chodec, earlier known as Slfi (talk) 15:43, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- Sure?
- Your reasoning is incorrect. To get them in the Category:Other speedy deletions category you need to do a null edit. Your edit was the trigger but doesn't solve the problem (it's the way MediaWiki works). Just save the category without changing anything and it shows up in Category:Other speedy deletions. Can you please tell me:
- Why categorized pictures of mine are claimed by your bot as uncategorized?
- Why the categorization of the mincer_xxx.pngs has been deleted(?) after the upload process or not overtaken(?) during the upload process? --Sigbert (talk) 18:22, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
-
- See User:CategorizationBot#Why did CategorizationBot notify me of already categorized images?
- I don't understand your question exactly. When you uploaded this image it didn't contain any categories. Maybe you used hotcat, but didn't press ok to accept the category you added?

[edit] BotMultichillT removing valid Uncategorized tags
Hi! It looks like BotMultichillT is engaged in a bit of an edit war with CategorizationBot over what constitutes minimally accepted categorization. For example, in this edit, BotMultichillT removed what I believe is a correct Uncategorized tag. The file has no topic categories, but only hidden categories (CC-BY-SA-3.0, Self-published work and Category:Uploaded with UploadWizard) and one non-hidden maintenance category (Deletion requests July 2011). The same also applies to the uploads of RedeAssistencialSP, if you need more examples. Would it be possible to tweak the heuristics to avoid this issue? —LX (talk, contribs) 09:31, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

I note that you've unblocked this user before; is it OK that he's continuing to remove problems tags from images without fixing the problem? This isn't my first run in with him. I originally just placed a nice note on his talk page, but I see this has been a problem before. The diff is here: [5]. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:25, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- If someone disputes you're (semi-)speedy deletion it's bad practice to revert this user. You should have opened a regular deletion request, not just reverted Pieter. Multichill (talk) 07:52, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Ah; I see how this works. Everyone tells the user to stop, and two Dutch admins just step in to set up a protection racket. Awesome. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:07, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- Me being Dutch has nothing to do with this. This is how I responded and will respond to very (semi-)speedy deletion which gets disputed. And yes, I protect images from getting needlessly deleted. Multichill (talk) 20:12, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
So you've decided to ignore policy which says that images have to be sourced. That's pretty haughty of you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:24, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- Stop implying things and stick to the facts.
- If someone disputes a no souce/permission you don't just revert them, you open a regular deletion request. Multichill (talk) 20:27, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I've implied nothing. I think your actions suck and I said so directly. By allowing someone to remove a no source tag for any reason whatsoever (including "it doesn't matter", I like it, etc.) that is outside a genuine sourcing, you've allowed for de facto disruption and emasculated the "images must be sourced" policy that Commons has. That is why the entirety of the admin corps other than one other Dutch admin seems to disagree with you (I can't see how that would be worth wheel-warring over, but I guess I wasn't there every time). [edit] Onroerend erfgoed
Wie is beslissingsbevoegd? Hi! One question regarding Commons:Deletion_requests/Template:ITTF (deleted by you). So you don't deem the permission statement on the ITTF website as sufficient (bold quote in the first DR)?

[edit] Geograph bot and multichillbot problems
Both bots have related (but different) issues mainly related to adding lots of files to "town and village" categories - that is utlimately counterproductive - since the whole categories need to be cleaned (no easy way to tell which are right or wrong) - the problem is that both the bots make mistakes. Your bot's main problem is that it is adding many files to categories of which the files are already in subcategories eg Category:Hambleton has many files in which should not be there.
Here's the sort of thing your bot gets wrong - [6]
I'm suggesting that geograph bot either use maintenence categories, or a geographic method based on actual boundary data, or to stop until fixed.
I'm not sure how responsible your bot is - I've seen it make some mistakes but I think Geograpbot is making the most errors. Please respond on the linked page if your bot is part of the problem. Imgaril (talk) 19:51, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimania/Flickr
Hi,
I saw that your bot took all the pictures from our Flickr stream - that's great! But he mix all into one category, not into sets like flickr, not into the right category ("Images from Wikimania 2011 organization team) and without the Template:Wikimania2011-License... Can anything can be done to change that? --Itzike (talk) 18:25, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Itzike, is that tracker category and Wikimania2011-License really needed? People will just sort out the category I guess. Upload is very slow at the moment so I rather not kill it. I created Commons:Flickr batch uploading/Wikimania 2011 so that we can easily get a lot of Wikimania 2011 to Commons. Multichill (talk) 19:05, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Multichill!
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

[edit] "Trying to find a better category"
CAN YOU STOP UNVIELING IMAGES HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE TO CATEGORIES THAT DO NOT BELONG TO THE IMAGES YOU ARE IDENTIFYING. Image for "View South along Berry Street from the corner of Bold Place" in Liverpool is in Liverpool city centre and you added Toxteth and Dingle "IRELAND" on some kind of assumption basis. Please if you have to can you just add Liverpool? Only you are also pulling up files that are nothing to do with Liverpool. I realise this is known as a bot but you are the controller you need to look at this. You are being very ignorant in not responding to my earlier messages. Can you figure away around this as your edits are becoming quite a pest. Babydoll0409 (talk) 20:42, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for you message. As you can see my talk page has become a random dumping ground so I sometimes miss messages. I'll have a look at it. Multichill (talk) 22:01, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
Hi - just drop a quick comment on this:
The Dingle error is the result of a disambiguation error.
However, Toxteth is result of the inadequacy of the underlying databases: Neither have a distinct location for "the city centre of Liverpool", so instead match to neighbouring districts such as Toxteth. I'd say the database (and nearest point routine) are likely to be completely unreliable within cities, and its better to place the files in the city category (or <subject> in city) categories only.
One suggestion, that should be easy to implement, is make the bot ignore any <suburb> locations on OSM, and those marked as <fcode>PPLX</fcode> on geonames. IMO, the best solution is be to switch the localisation from a "nearest point" routine to something that looks at boundaries - but that would take more time/effort. I'll make a more detailed post on why that's a good thing to the batch page later.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:41, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] WLM database - Sweden
Hi,
I saw in the statistics section of Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monuments_database that it says that 100% of the Swedish entries have coordinates. As can be seen from e.g. sv:Lista över kyrkliga kulturminnen i Skåne län#Svedala_kommun this isn't the case. I'm therefore worried that the list to database process is misinterpreting the empty fields. /Lokal_Profil 16:42, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Category move?
I'm not sure if it's worth a huge amount of effort, but I think at some point Category:Images from the National Archives and Records Administration should probably be renamed to Category:Media from the National Archives and Records Administration, as it includes some video and sound files, and will hopefully soon include a lot more. The other NARA categories are also named that way ("Media contributed by..." "Media from NARA needing categories..."). It'll involve changing a few of the templates, too. Where was this category re-organisation discussed? There is no tagging of it or linkage to any discussion. This is a massive change to a large structure: "Vehicles of" and "Vehicles in" are not the same thing at all. The same thing came up in March and was rejected, as it was combining and confusing these two sub-trees, one for manufacture and one for photo location. First of all, thank you so much for help with cultural heritage lists for WLM Norway!
Due to a bug, the WLM row template fails to parse correctly if a single page contains more than about 500 rows. We have fixed the affected WLM pages by splitting then up multiple smaller pages.
- Is this 500 row limitation a known bug in other WLM lists?
- What is the correct procedure if we want to add an image column in the WLM tables with a small thumbnail of the monument if a monument has been uploaded to Commons? (preferably a bot job)

[edit] Geographicus maps copyright tagging
Hi Multichill, I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this but you appear to be responsible for uploading the majority of the Geographicus maps that are on Commons. Anyway, I've been looking at a lot of these maps and have noticed that the majority are tagged as 'PD-art' which shows (for me, I'm located in the UK) that the item is in the public domain because the copyright has expired as more than 70 years have passed since the death of the author. However, as far as I can tell this tag is incorrect for most of the maps - the main problem is that the majority do not have an identified author and thus no basis on which to claim that 70 years have passed since his/her death. Several of the maps explicitly state in the description that the author is unknown but the 'Death + 70' tag is still used. Moreover, on maps where an author has been identified, there are several where the author clearly did not die more than 70 years ago, e.g. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1950_Joseph_Feher_Dole_Map_of_Hawaii_-_Geographicus_-_Hawaii-feher-1950.jpg but the Death + 70 tag is still used. Jakob Reznik (talk) 13:22, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Just wanted to add that what I've said above applies only to the maps I've looked at, I haven't looked at all of them. I have subsequently noticed that many of the maps are sufficiently old that a Death + 70 is clearly fine even if the author is unidentified, but there are also quite a lot from the 1920s/30s/40s etc where a Death + 70 tag is used but the author is either unidentified or did not die prior to 1941. [edit] online personalities
The situation that was here when I left was not good.
People who at one time were writing functional software were abusing the glory of having written this software; personalities that had been those of bright, enthusiastic and clever dissolved into textbook defined personalities who were only capable of making minor edits existing code pieces, maniacs who were abusive and condescending to other users and allowed to be this way because of glories so far gone it would not have been allowed to continue this way in the real world. Real life would have kicked the crap out of you and at one time, this job of getting the crap out of this nick would have itself taken a very long while and perhaps more than one tough person to do this nasty job....
I actually became embarrassed that I had at one time shared a same opinion with this nick.
The code that I saw in that bot code was perhaps not something that you should be so quick to take credit for. It is going to be 5 years soon since the person manning this nick started to write python. Where is the evolution? Where is the learning and the improvement?
I suggest that if this nick is going to be active here, that some reasonable explanation be provided for the lack of growth and for the personality change that occurred after this nick was told "google would probably be interested in this stuff you wrote here".
I can only come up with one explanation. That explanation, if it is the truth of the situation, would require that this account be deactivated and apologies and properties returned to those who are deserving of it.
In the meanwhile, I spent a few hours being embarrassed for you about the code in that bot that I looked at. Me being embarrassed is probably not helpful since I did not write that and had I written that, it would have been rewritten by now to ease my embarrassment. 5 years is a long time to be embarrassed for.
Consider deactivation. -- Queeg (talk) 16:19, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
- I don't have a clue what you're talking about. You talk in riddles. Who is "this nick"? What code are you talking about? Multichill (talk) 12:26, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
When I was a young child, long ago, sometimes I would get caught having done wrong or done the bad thing or lying or doing something that was if not against the rules, against the spirit of the rules; I would, oh so quickly, make up a reason that my misdeed was acceptable or even expected or perhaps, good for all involved. Recent activity here has the stench of this type of behavior. To have conducted this without an explanation, written in natural language to innocent people (me, for instance) is perhaps further evidence that you are (still) not capable of working with people in a community project such as commons is.
Once again, I with as much respect as I can scrape from the bottom of what is left of my good feelings of you in 2007, I ask you to deactivate this nick and consider starting over and this time, be real.
This nick, assuming it is a single user and the same user which started it, seems to have reached a boundary in evolution and learning ability back in 2008-9. Such things should not disqualify contributions, but such things should be considered for disqualifying for leadership or anything that might require decent natural language explanations be provided for other users.
I would not work with the 2009 MultiChill, nor would I have this person willingly in my life for very long (suggesting separation via shift changes or the firing of if no one wanted to work with them from the people who could do this). And, it seems that you are not doing so well working with people. The mid-2007 MultiChill was a different person and one that made me happy to be here.
Your own talk page rules require that people "Be Polite". Polite is an interesting phenomena and I can honestly say that sometimes "Be Honest" is far more polite than any politeness your history can provide. "Polite" is not condescending. Condescending is condescending, polite is more often like understanding the person and the expectations and making suggestions based on this. It is with this type of politeness that I ask you to look over your own history here, and consider starting a new nick and use your own experiences manually doing what your bots have done and re-write them using your own experiences. That is how I write python and my authoring has evolved and I even found a bug or two in the language and I have also been the start of a suggestion (I think) because I needed a way to simply truncate a string and python had no way to do this.
I admit, I am thinking that the python that appears here has been stolen from my desktop. The suggestion at the pump that people hand edit the names of the NARA files are such a thing that makes me think this. Such a sad and sorry way to learn a skill -- and this qualifies a person for eh, what beyond being a creepy person who is qualified for what? Maybe you do this, maybe others do this -- maybe I am wrong. A way to prove that I am wrong is to write a bot using your own experiences. I write python for a different project and have a place to put this online and sometimes I do this. You are supposed to be writing python for this project.
Do you also find it as interesting as I do that I had no real problem here until my other nick was identified? Please consider deactivating and starting over. It was good for me. It should also be good for you. Do some mundane work here and consider how it could be managed with software. Remake yourself as not a creep who has reached his intellectual boundary years ago. Learn how to communicate with real people. -- Queeg (talk) 04:12, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Cultural Heritage Russia
Please do not make inconsistent changes in this template! Have you written comments and objections received here. This template will be used to automatically categorize - but not in the general category "Cultural heritage monuments in Russia", but in sybcats by regions, districts and cities. Category "Cultural heritage monuments in Russia" will contain _only_ subcategories. Current filling of this category is temporary, just are not ready yet our tools for analysis and correction of file descriptions and categorisations. There was no need to transfer all the new category "Cultural heritage monuments in Russia still categorized by a template".--Kaganer (talk) 00:57, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
WHAT AT ALL are you doing with the template "Cultural Heritage Russia" and the categories? Would you please return all the changes about removing the categories? They have their special purpose!--PereslavlFoto (talk) 18:57, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe you should calm down a bit before posting. Using templates to add categories is considered bad practice here. I manually added the categories and after that removed the template categorization thing. Multichill (talk) 21:10, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- I see that was an insult, and this is why I changed the words. You may be sure that your deed is much more than my word. Especially because I will spend many hours reverting your bot change.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 21:16, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Let's speak about the aim. Please imagine an image uploaded. A human being takes a huge labour to fill the description, a great amount of hard work to add this template, an unusual mental hardship to fill all the fields. Don't you think that such user gains an ability to avoid excessive & useless adding of the category in case a template can add the category itself? Please compare two phrases: "Township" (8 letters) and "Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Township" (48 letters). What is easier to type, 8 letters or 48 letters? Another question: you see a template with the fields that are to be filled. You state the place and thus set the category. But if you don't see the field, how do you know that the item has to be added to category? How can you imagine there is a category you are to fill in? In my opinion, this is too hard to keep in mind. The template helps to minimize this work.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 21:22, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Dear Colleague Multichill! You obviously do not understand how and why we use this template. This template is only in appearance similar to other heritage markers, but its purpose and method of use is different. Ways to work with this pattern is also different. This is a real works of real group of experienced Commons users. Please, in future, before you improve something in the template, ask us, whether you understand everything. Thanks in advance! --Kaganer (talk) 22:10, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
[edit] bad practice
You say: This template got a lot of extra info. — You are right: this template was prepared exactly to show that extra information. This is a special template to carry the official data from Russian cultural heritage registry. The fields in the information template do not fit to carry the data fields from the above-mentioned Registry. Proclaiming their place to be at some wikipedia you automatically state that Commons is an appendix to some wikipedia; we cannot second this point of view and thus we will foster this template henceforth.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 19:09, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
What about automatic categories, they are not automatic at all. They are labelled by a human being filling the special part of the template. The template's field was appointed to keep the category for the convenience of us, users of that template.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 19:09, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Now this looks like — you take the template and break its functionality and keep it from fulfillment of its tasks. This is not a true way of acting without consulting other template users / creators. Shame on you.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 19:09, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

What meaning do you find in this?
I ask because your bot put images there and then you were rude, abusive and allowed mindless button pushers to be rude and abusive to those humans giving those images some attention.
How do you, master bot author, interpret the meaning of that category? -- Queeg (talk) 05:18, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

File:Flickr - …trialsanderrors - New York City municipal airports, WPA poster, ca. 1937.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file description page.

Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.
If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. [edit] Template:NRHP
I'm trying to be consistent with your intentions in deploying Template:NRHP, and have added it to several dozen categories and perhaps 1000 images. I'm wondering, though, about something like Category:Harvard Belmont Landmark District. I've added it to the category, but it seems misleading to attach it to the subcategories and to the many images in those categories. It would tend to suggest that these individual buildings are registered historic places, rather than merely being part of a designated registered historic district. [edit] Suggestion for quick categorizing
I have an idea for quick sorting of image files to categories, which I think commons should implement. Not knowing who to talk to, I searched for someone who is a programmer and who cares about categories.
Problem: If you look at Category:Giraffa camelopardalis there are still 135 unsorted pictures of giraffes, even after I gave it ample attention. I guess one can sort them quickly by bot, but the average user is not comfortable with using a bot. Most of these 135 files need to go to Category:Giraffa camelopardalis in zoos, but to get them there requires 135 edits (to my knowledge), a great number of mouse clicks, and quite a bit of bandwith.
Solution by example: In your gmail account you can delete or move any message (think file) with one click, if they are ticked beforehand. The operator (delete or move) works on all the files that are ticked. If every file in every category of commons has a place for a tick mark, and you have an add cat and change cat operator at the top, then all those files can be moved, or changed, in one go. [edit] Uploading images from Europeana
Hi Multichill,
I've seen you have been involved with the Europeana pilot. Looks like a very cool project. I have a questions: Is there any tool/bot available at this point which can be used to upload images/information from Europeana on demand. For example, if I want to upload this object, what is the best/right way? Thanks a lot! --Codrin.B (talk) 15:09, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Updates for translatewiki.
Multichill, maybe you could send the "authority control" parameter of creator to translatewiki, like other parameters ? Here is what we currently have :
- de: Normdaten
- en: Authority control
- fr: Autorité
- mk: Нормативна контрола
- ru: Авторитетный контроль
I think institution could be sent too (if new parameters are created, they are likely to use already existing labels.
Thanks.--Zolo (talk) 21:18, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Tropenmuseum
Hi, I understand you're busy and I'm sorry to bother you with this again, but some miscategorisations by your bot have not been repaired yet. Many Tropenmuseum pictures were assigned obviously wrong categories. For example, a photo in which “twee missionarissen zijn op bezoek in een Marrondorp” was put in the categories Huts in Indonesia, Christian mission in Indonesia and Families of Indonesia (diff). Since you operated the bot, I thought perhaps you might know best how to quickly identify which files are affected and fix the problem, or at least you know who else might be able to do so. I've contacted you about this in April 2010, but I guess you were busy and later forgot about it. Dustsucker (talk) 11:41, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Template:PD-Italy
Hi there, you restored PD-Italy in 2009, which had been deleted in 2006 following Commons:Deletion_requests/Template:PD-Italy. Your edit summary was "Keep the history around". The PD-Italy template has now been raised at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Template:PD-Italy. Can you comment there on what should be done? Right now we seem to have a license template, which is in use, which contradicts a DR decision that the license is not compatible with Commons' terms. This is a problem! Thanks. Rd232 (talk) 16:23, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- I restored this version just to keep the history around. Will reply over there. Multichill (talk) 15:17, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Bot category choices
I am not certain how the bot chooses the categories but a number of categories added to the al-Jezeera patch could be seen as offensive or worse. File:Public Security's Khalid Fahad al-Shunaber - Flickr - Al Jazeera English.jpg: Mr. al-Shunaber probably does not deserve to be categorized as The Devil (just because he was a police official at the Stoning of the Devil ceremony). A number of apparently Sikh refugees in Swat valley were categorized as Taliban, etc. Oddly, a few pictures I noticed were put in category white and category house, instead of category White House. Rmhermen (talk) 18:10, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- LOL, blame the people who added the tags. That's why I add Category:Files from Al Jazeera to check. Feel free to correctly categorize these images and don't forget to remove the Category:Files from Al Jazeera to check category. Multichill (talk) 22:53, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Old maps
Pastmapper (http://www.pastmapper.com/) might be a good thing to consider adding to your list of projects that use old maps. It just launched last week, and features old maps redrawn to match current-day Google Maps. Right now it features San Francisco in 1853, but it's expanding soon.
[edit] Categorization message
Hey Maarten, I wanted to follow up on Erik's edits back in September to Please link images. Not only would translation be a good thing I think (and easier now with Jon's new system?) but Maryana and I would love to A/B test the bot messages, ideally in several languages. What do you think? (You can ping me on IRC too.) Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 00:22, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- What new system are you talking about exactly?
- A/B testing sounds like a plan. What do you have in mind exactly? Multichill (talk) 20:10, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- I am actually not quite sure how they're doing it, but as part of a fellowship Jon worked up a volunteer translations group for content (not software) that is pretty good. I believe it just happens on Meta.
- As for the testing, what we've done so far is sort of primitive but it works. Basically what we do is replace the current template referenced in the bot's settings with a template that randomly applies one of the test options using parser functions. We can also include hidden tracking templates if needs be. Depending on the volume of the bot, a test takes at least 30 days to collect enough data, then we take it down and do some statistical wizardry on it. We've just completed similar tests with XLinkBot and SDPatrolBot on EN, so other than pointing us to the config and/or source on-wiki and reviewing the templates, we shouldn't need much help. Sound okay? Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 23:13, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Re: NRHP tagging
Thanks for the note; it's good to see all the new tags. I've just observed an error affecting the tags for all properties listed from 2000 to 2009 — not enough digits are present. All reference numbers are eight digits, but the bot appears to be stripping out the leading zeroes; see File:Aqueduct Bridge.jpg for what the bot did and what I did to fix it. Nyttend (talk) 01:02, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
- I, too, appreciate the bot tagging -- but, because I took a lot of them, I have a lot on my watchlist. Shouldn't the bot be adding the "b" watchlist tag as well as the "m" tag?
- Also, a thought for the future -- when I photograph an NRHP site, I usually upload a selection of images. I wonder if there is a way to add the tag to all of them, not just those used in the article? Thanks again, Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:21, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yea good use of a bot! I was going to comment about the multiple images per site as well as adding the bot flag. My watchlist is so hot it is glowing. Good job! Royalbroil 16:45, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, right, that bot isn't flagged here. I have quite some different bots, so I kind of lost track. Will ask for a flag, but the process is a bit broken so I wonder how long it will take. Multichill (talk) 16:49, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
- Seriously? Why did you even bother with the bot requests if you're just going to run the bot without permission? If you're going to insult the process to its face, at least be honest and just run it unapproved. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:49, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Since the restoration was completely out of process, I have deleted the file again according to the valid result of the deletion request. - Hi Multichill. I find your comment rather unpleasant. Uploader Bakel123 has made many trials and errors but his learning curve is not improving. Two of his latest contributions mention the websites he took them from: [8] is from [9] and has a copyright notice here: [10] and [11] is from [12] and has a copyright notice here: [13]. I would recommend speedy deletion. It is not correct to blame the person who points out mistakes and fixes them. Blame instead the person who repeatedly makes mistakes and childishly complains on many talk pages how badly he is being treated. --VanBuren (talk) 14:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
