Advisory - Peering Issues

The following advisory discusses an ongoing incident.

We have received reports o dropped packets and high latency to connections across multiple routes from and to multiple hosts spread over a geographically disperse area in the United Kingdom, which we believe is related to a peering issue at the London INternet eXchange (LINX). We are currently monitoring the situation and will update our customers as the situation evolves. This will result in loss of packets and poor connectivity but will not permanently affect any data or infrastructure belonging to ThinkGrid.

UPDATE 16:58:28 - We now believe this is stabilised although we will continue to monitor the situation.

Planned Maintenance in the W06 Data Centre (Pyrmont, NSW)

Planned Maintenance Notification

Overview - Planned Maintenance

The following advisory was rescheduled from Sunday May 27th and will now take place on Sunday June 3rd. Our Pyrmont, NSW (Australia) data centre will undergo some network hardware upgrades this coming Sunday; this is a low risk operation and should benefit general connectivity to the data centre. This will affect servers and desktops homed in the W06 data centre; no other services will be affected.

Date and Time:

9:00am-11:00am AEST Sunday June 3rd (12:00am-2:00am BST)

System(s) Affected:

Connectivity at the W06 (Pyrmont, NSW) Data Centre

Scope:

W06 (Pyrmont, NSW) IaaS, HVDI 1.0, HVDI 2.0 desktops

Activity:

Upgrade of network switches and edge routers.

Impact:

At 9:15am AEST there will be a 5 minute internet outage; further there will be a single packet drop around 10:15am. In between, and after these times, all services will function normally.

Risk:

  • Low to moderate risk of overrun
  • Moderate risk of loss of connectivity

Reason / Justification:

  • Improvement of performance, stability and reliability of connectivity to hosts in the W06 data centre.
  • Prevention of loss of service.

Activity:

Critical upgrade of Cisco ASA appliance.

Impact:

Some packet loss anticipated to hosts in the W06 data centre.

Risk:

  • Low to moderate risk of overrun
  • Moderate risk of loss of connectivity

Reason / Justification:

  • Improvement of performance, stability and reliability of connectivity to hosts in the W06 data centre.
  • Prevention of loss of service.

Important Announcements - Using the Service Desk

News Subscriptions - Planned Maintenance

As you may have seen from recent news articles, ThinkGrid is adopting a standard format for planned maintenance notifications. Where planned maintenance does not entail specific precautions for certain customers and does not demand a specific or confidential distibution list, we will notify on our Service Desk site, through the News function. You may receive news articles by Subscribing to the ThinkGrid Service Desk, which you can do from the front page using the Subscribe link. I strongly recommend any interested parties take part.

On a secondary note I'm pleased to note that we have introduced a new short article on how to use the ThinkGrid Service Desk website as effectively as possible - this guide is well worth consulting as it outlines some of the many useful features of the site - including reviewing status of tickets, using 'widgets' to accomplish certain tasks quickly and effectively, and rating agent performance in individual tickets to aid in ThinkGrid service improvement. Overview - Planned Maintenance

Date and Time:

23:00 BST - 23:30 BST May 8th 2012

System(s) Affected:

ThinkGrid Service Desk website

Scope:

The ThinkGrid Service Desk website will be unavailable for up to 30 minutes; during this time telephone and email support will still be available.

Activity:

We will be upgrading PHP on the Service Desk site server and rebuilding the support databases.

Impact:

The Service Desk website will be unresponsive or unavailable during some of this time.

Risk:

Low to moderate risk of overrun

Reason / Justification:

Improvement of performance and reporting capabilities.
