SQL Server and MSDE version compatibility

I am having difficulty finding version compatibility information for the many versions of SQL Server. Can two different versions of SQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine (MSDE)/Windows MSDE co-exist on one server? I have two applications that utilize MSDE (2000) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) wanting WMSDE.

As of SQL Server 2000, and continuing with SQL Server 2005, all versions are effectively compatible and can safely co-exist on the same server using separate named instances. This applies to both the core database engine and MSDE, as well as the newer SQL Server Express.
