Translate problem [edit]
Anybody can tell me what "public domain help pages" exactly means ? Cumeo89 15:33, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Unified categories [edit]
I've unified categories across language using NS:Pagename/categories subpage. For example,
Category:Manual `-transclude-> Template:Categories `-transclude-> Category:Manual/categories
Now, I'm rethinking to change the name of the unified categories to Template:Categories/NS:Pagename rather than NS:Pagename/categories. Not sure which is more suitable. --Ans 14:07, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- To be honest, I really don't understand this template, or what problem it is supposed to be solving. To my mind it makes it a lot harder to figure out what's happening on the site and is completely unintuitive. What was your reasoning behind this change? Is it documented anywhwere? --HappyDog 22:41, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
-
- For consistency of categories among many languages of specific title, the unified categories page like NS:Title/categories is used then.
Category:Manual/ja `-transclude-> Template:Categories `-transclude-> Category:Manual/categories Category:Manual/fr `-transclude-> Template:Categories `-transclude-> Category:Manual/categories
-
- But I'm not sure if these unified categories pages should rather be in Template namespace or not.
Category:Manual/ja `-transclude-> Template:Categories `-transclude-> Template:Categories/Category:Manual

- I still don't understand what this is for. Why not just use normal category links? --HappyDog 14:36, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
-
- Which one that you not understand?
- You don't understand the current template flow? or
- You understand current flow, but just not understand why need change the template name?
- Could you please demonstrate the way that "normal category links" are used?

- Normal categories are insterted by using [[Category:Category name]]. This is transparent and clear and obvious to anyone who has used MediaWiki before. The first time I spotted {{Categories}} I nearly removed it thinking it was a typo, and it took at least 5 minutes of investigation to figure out that it was intended. This unexpected new syntax is a big barrier to editing for most users who won't have a clue what this random bit of markup means or how to use it. How is someone supposed to add categories to a page now? How are they supposed to find this out? Currently, I don't really see any advantage to this method, but I see quite a few disadvantages. Hence my question - what is the problem this is trying to solve? --HappyDog 11:19, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

- The template is trying to solve the inconsistency of categories among language subpages.
- This is necessary to achieve the maintainability.
- However, people can still add categories in their traditional familiar syntax.
- Any expert can later help those people moving the added categories to the proper place, to improve maintainability.
- However, my proposal here is not trying to solve the categories consistency problem.
- The template is trying to solve the inconsistency of categories among language subpages.
