try{
 System.out.println(surveyReportList.get(0).getEmploymentStatus());
}
catch(Exception e){
 System.out.println(e.getCause());
 e.printStackTrace();
}

I'm trying to get one of the field values in my list and I'm receiving a ClassCastException. I'm getting the right size of my list using surveyReportList.size();.

Here's the stacktrace and my surveyReportList is of type List<SurveyReport> Line 103 is within that try block.

Somehow you're violating the integrity of surveyReportList such that it doesn't contain only SurveyReports but also Object[]s. How is surveyReportList declared? How is it used? – Mark Peters Mar 21 at 4:05

This is not nearly enough information. You need to at least provide the trace, and possibly more.There's no way to tell from this where the exception is being thrown, especially given that none of the code you're displaying actually includes a cast. – Steve B. Mar 21 at 4:06
@Steve: Agreed, however there certainly is an implicit cast in the fetch from the list. – Mark Peters Mar 21 at 4:08
please provide the stack trace. Is " System.out.println(surveyReportList.get(0).getEmploymentStatus());" causing error ? If so please refer Mr.Ryan Stewart answer. – Amith Mar 21 at 4:15

Most likely improper use of generics. surveyReportList is probably of type List<SurveyReport>, but at some point, you have some compiler warnings about unchecked operations, and somehow something that isn't a SurveyReport is being added to that list. Look into where the list is coming from and how it gets created initially.

As a concrete example, the following code will create the same exception you're seeing:

List untyped = new ArrayList();
untyped.add(new Object[0]);
List<String> strings = untyped;
System.out.println(strings.get(0).length());

Result:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: [Ljava.lang.Object; cannot be cast to java.lang.String

It's a ClassCastException because the compiler basically turns

strings.get(0).length()

into

((String) strings.get(0)).length()
