I just developed the front end of a unique application for which I coded all the HTML, CSS, jQuery, and JavaScript. Now I want to start developing the back-end or admin panel. What's the best option to use a custom template and save the stress of designing the interface or code the whole CSS/HTML?

What's the best take, especially when I think my web application is going to be a major hit and also to avoid issues about legal stuff?

This would depend a lot on details of your project. Since the Admin interface often requires less fine tuning for things like GUI effects and design, as custom template is often easier and saves time (though writing some simple html/css in this case isn't the big issue too). To avoid legal issues, just use some OSS solution if possible, there are enough around. – thorsten müller Apr 19 at 14:45

What are you using on the backend right now? The answer can change drastically depending. Django has a pre-built admin site based on your models, for example. – Izkata Apr 20 at 18:33

Check out Twitter Bootstrap. http://twitter.github.io/bootstrap/.

It's always my goto library when skinning a back end as it takes minutes and looks really good too.

extJs http://www.sencha.com/products/extjs is also a good start, especially for backend. You get a lot of fancy JS features included.

System administrators usually are people who can remotely take over a machine. So if you like you can make a web interface, but it's not a requirement for them. A Windows Forms application (if you're on Windows) is usually enough for them. There is no need for PowerShell integration of your application, most system administrators are older..

A quick-and-dirty method for a few settings is using an XML file, but be sure to have a backup since system administrators often screwup software, as you know.

I would recommend Django or Google App Engine, You can use the Jinja template engine and both come with great options for admin panels, etc. You can even use Django on top of Google App Engine. You will need to use Python for Django, and Python or Java for Google App Engine.

The OP is asking for css/html which is framework/language agnostic. You are mentioning django, python, java. Why would you do that. – Nick Apr 19 at 19:50
@Nick We don't know what he's using on the backend. If it is Django, then he has next to no work ahead - it builds itself based on the models. – Izkata Apr 20 at 18:32
