The Dreamweaver find and replace tool was very handy. (I no longer use Dreamweaver.)

You could perform conditional search and replace on tags and/or tag attributes, which was very effective for cleaning up (atrociously) bad Word HTML code, for instance.

Do you know of an alternative to the HTML find & replace tool found in Dreamweaver?

This question is too broad and not appropriate for this site. It belongs on StackOverflow but you need to give a specific tool or language you are trying to use because many other IDEs have site wide find & replace (e.g. Visual Studio) or are you looking for a tool that does F&R on a directory? – RandomBen Sep 30 '11 at 13:21

If you don't think it is too broad then re-ask as is on Stack Overflow and see what happens. My concern is that every major tool I have ever used allows for multi-page Find and Replace. So what is special about what you are looking for? That is the question that needs you need to answer in your question so people can help you answer. – RandomBen Oct 2 '11 at 18:59
Okay. I've just re-stumbled upon regular expressions, and I will give XEmacs a go. Perhaps what is unique to my request is automating the composition of regular expression strings to suit an HTML environment. If I can get going with regexp that requirement is nulled. Unfortunately Notepad++ does not support the newline character within regexp search and replace mode, and the extended mode which does support the newline character does not support regexps. Not sure why they limited it that way. – Steve Oct 2 '11 at 19:57
