  • The New MCSAs and MCSEs, Your Questions Answered...

    Hi Everyone!

As hopefully you all have seen, about two and a half weeks ago we announced our new cloud-enabled certifications – Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) and Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)! We have had lots of great questions come through about all the changes we have made and we wanted to make sure you all have the answers to these questions in one place.

I have the MCITP: EA and/or MCITP: SA. What do the changes mean to me?

It seems there is confusion and concern regarding the existing MCITP: Enterprise Administrator and MCITP: Server Administrator certifications and what they mean moving forward in this new program. The MCITP: EA and MCITP: SA are still the certifications to strive for on Windows Server 2008 technology. The MCSA: Windows Server 2008 was created solely as a pre-requisite for the new MCSE: Private Cloud certification.

Those of you that already earned the MCITP: EA were granted the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification as a way for us to acknowledge the expertise you already have. They are not considered equivalent certifications.

I have the MCITP: VA. What do the changes mean to me?

For those of you that have achieved the MCITP: Virtualization Administrator certification, this still remains a very valuable certification. For those of you on the path to achieving the MCITP: VA, keep on moving. Many organizations are looking for individuals with virtualization skills. As for moving into our new program, if you passed exam 659, you have passed one of the 5 exams required for the MCSE: Private Cloud certification. If you haven't already passed your Windows Server exams, we recommend you pursue the MCSA: Windows Server 2008. We have a promotion running now through June to help, if you are interested - buy your MCSA.

You announced MCSA: WS 2008, but why isn’t there an MCSE for Windows Server?

I think there is some confusion about that we announced the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification, but yet there are no MCSE certifications announced for Windows Server. The MCSA and MCSE certifications based on Windows Server 2012 technology will be announced in the near future. When we announce the MCSA and MCSE certifications based on Windows Server 2012, we will be providing upgrade paths for all of you that have earned the MCITP: SA and/or MCITP: EA certifications, making it easier to transition in to the new program. Eventually (within about a year or so), you will see that the pre-requisite for the MCSE: Private Cloud certification will then require the MCSA on Windows Server 2012 technology. Additionally, for those of you that have passed exam 659: TS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Virtualization and now have the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification, you only have one exam left to earn the new MCSE: Private Cloud certification (exam 246).

What is MCSA: SQL Server 2008 about, and how does it lead to the new MCSE: DP or MCSE: BI?

Similar to the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification, we have awarded the new MCSA: SQL Server 2008 certification. Those individuals who have passed exam 432: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Implementation and Maintenance and exam 448: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance have now been granted the MCSA: SQL Server 2008 certification. You are now one step closer to achieve the MCSE: Data Platform and/or the MCSE: Business Intelligence certification.

I’m excited about the new certifications and titles! But what was going on with the new logos?

For those of you that already saw your new certification and tried to access your new logos, you may have seen the logos were incorrect. Thank you to all of you who let us know this issue was happening. The issue is now fixed and we apologize for any inconvenience.

We hope this information is helpful and if you have questions let us know.

    Have a great day!

    Erika

  • SMEs on Parade

We’ve posted a lot about how to be a Subject Matter Expert for Microsoft Learning, but have you ever actually seen a SME? Ever wondered what one looks like? Or even secretly wondered if they really exist? To put those and other pressing questions of our day to rest, in the latest episode of Cert Talk I interview two veteran SMEs: Marcin Policht and Kyle Rosenthal. Plus you get to see our fancy new video screen behind us! And don’t miss another great installment from Joe Schmuckatelli who isn’t exactly representative of our SME pool. Though he is darn good at dramatic swivels. You have to give him that.

You can find the latest Cert Talk episode here.

You can also download it in one of our pleasing video formats: WMV | MP4 | WMV (ZIP) | PSP

What's that? You wish you had just an audio file to listen to in your car or at the gym? You're in luck! Use one of these handy files: WMA | MP3

  • Donate Your Old Laptop for 20 Years|20 Ways and Earth Day

Electronic waste is the fastest growing form of municipal waste. Every year Americans throw away three to four hundred million electronic items and with new laptops or tablet models coming out each month, those numbers will continue to grow.

Ironically, millions of people in the U.S. and around the world don't have access to computers. They aren't able to gain computer skills, access the Internet, or communicate by email.  If only a small percentage of the computers we're throwing away were refurbished and reused, people in need would have the computers they need to create the futures they want.

If you're ready to donate your old computer, here are some important guidelines:

Donate to a Nonprofit:  As a donor, you can write off the current retail value of your computer. BUT only nonprofit organizations can give donors a receipt for tax purposes.

Donate to an organization that does reuse:  Recycling is good, but reuse is better.  When a computer is recycled it is broken down into its component materials (copper, steel, etc.) and used to build something new. When a computer is reused, it is used for its original purpose and there is no loss of resources.

Use a Certified Recycler:  There are two electronics recycling certifications that ensure recyclers properly handle all electronic waste and don't export it to countries that can't legally accept it.  These certifications are Responsible Recycling (R2) and Estewards.  Only donate equipment to organizations that hold one of these certifications.

Make sure your data is safe:  Not all organizations that accept donated computers have the technology to safely destroy data on hard drives or the coverage to protect donors from liability.  Ask the recipient organization about their data destruction policies and procedures before you donate.

I am proud to work at Interconnection, the leading charitable computer reuse organization in the U.S..  Microsoft is helping us encourage people to donate their surplus laptops as part of Microsoft Learning's 20 Years|20 Ways celebration.  InterConnection is a Seattle based nonprofit that has shipped tens of thousands of computers to schools, nonprofits and community organizations in the U.S. and in forty countries.  We are the first nonprofit in the U.S. to be R2 and ISO14001 certified and have strict data destruction policies.

Whether you donate through InterConnection or another certified recycler, thank you for taking the time to donate your old computer! If you don't have an old laptop but still want to support responsible computer reuse and recycling, I invite you learn more about other ways you can get involved.

Before starting InterConnection, he worked as a natural resource planner, an ecotourism planner in Costa Rica, and an environmental educator in the Peace Corps in Paraguay.

  • Increase Your Marketability--Get Solution Certified

Today's IT professionals require the skills to design, implement and maintain complex solutions that meet business needs and create a competitive advantage for their companies. For example, to deploy and manage a private cloud solution, you need expertise in at least Windows Server Platform, System Center, and Virtualization. The way that you can prove that you have this expertise to hiring managers is through the Microsoft Certification Program.

Up until now, the Microsoft Certification Program has been predicated on specific technologies. Thus using the earlier example of private cloud expertise you would have to complete three technology specific certification tracks. This would have resulted in you earning at least the MCITP Enterprise Administrator on Windows Server 2008, MCITP Virtualization Administrator on Windows Server 2008 R2, and MCTS Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, Configuration. Even after earning these credentials, you might still have to convince your prospective employer that these demonstrate competency in the technologies pertinent to private cloud solutions.
The new solutions-oriented Microsoft Certification Program, released on the April 11, 2012, aligns competencies with business needs making it much easier for technical and non-technical hiring managers to translate your certifications to their needs. Referring back to the earlier example, now you earn a single certification—Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert: Private Cloud. The improved Microsoft Certification Program is a win-win for you and potential employers. Your skills are more marketable and more easily identifiable, and means you are better positioned to quickly find a rewarding job. The employer wins because they are able to more quickly identify the right candidate and have confidence in their ability to deliver value.
I work for New Signature, an innovative IT consulting firm in the Washington, D.C metro area that has doubled in size in the last year. This growth means that we're constantly evaluating new talent to join our dynamic team of experts. We look for candidates who have demonstrated expertise across an array of related technologies that align with specific solutions. Our experts need to deliver Microsoft solutions in on-premise, public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid environments. We are super excited about the new Microsoft Certification Program, because it supports and reinforces our hiring strategy.
With single-technology certifications it was easy to tell if one was current, because they included the version, e.g., Exchange 2010. With solutions such as private cloud, Office 365, etc., this is more difficult because they lack version numbers. For that reason, the new solutions-focused certifications will require recertification. This is perfect for IT professionals who pride themselves on maintaining knowledge of the latest technologies and great for hiring managers who rely on certifications to demonstrate technical competency.

Check out which solutions already have an associated Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert credential available, and increase your marketability today!

  • The 60-Day Private Cloud Certification Challenge…

Greetings True Believers and new visitors,

For those of you new to my blogging, a short introduction is probably in order.  My name is Michael Bender.  I am an MCT based out of Madison, WI.  I teach Microsoft Server classes and Virtualization classes at Madison College full time as well as doing some SMB consulting during my “free” time.  While not well maintained, until recently, I do write a blog based around technology and general stuff I find interesting at www.itsallgeek2mike.com.  You can also find me on Twitter via @MichaelBender.  Oh…I can’t forget about The Krewe.  You may have heard of them on twitter or facebook.  We think we are a big deal…and so should you

So what are we up to here?  Well two things:  First, I was intrigued by the new Private Cloud certification from Microsoft and was planning to take the exams at Microsoft TechEd.  Second, I wanted to get back to blogging on a regular basis.  So I came about the idea to blog about my journey to become a Microsoft Certified Solution Engineer : Private Cloud.  I ran the idea past Veronica Sopher at Microsoft Learning, and here we are.  The “60 Days to Microsoft Private Cloud Certification” was born.

The plan is for a 5-6 post blog series every week or two starting with today’s post.  In general, the topic of each post looks to be like this:

    1. Part 1 – Introduction to the 60 day Challenge
    2. Part 2 – The Plan (AKA Passing multiple exams in 60 days without going Nuts!)
    3. Part 3 – Building a Lab Environment and Current Study Progress
    4. Part 4 – Preparing for the Exam and Current Status
    5. Part 5 – Microsoft TechEd Arrival and Day of Exam 1
    6. Part 6 – Day of Exam 2 and Result

Along the way, I’ll be providing insight into the knowledge needed for the Private Cloud certification as well as passing my insight as a veteran of Microsoft certifications and exams.  Where applicable, I’ll be asking for insight from the audience as well as pinging Industry experts for their two cents.  The last part is necessary since I have a substantial background in Windows Server and virtualization, but I have little practical experience in the world of System Center.  So I’ll be trying to learn a brand new technology area along the way.  The hope is to provide you a framework for studying for not just the Private Cloud certification, but any certification exam for that matter.

So a lot of new information has come out in the last few days about Microsoft certifications that I’m still trying to digest, but hopefully we can make some sense of it  here.  I’m not going to go into great detail about what the new certifications mean, etc.  Some very smart people I know here , here, and  here have already done that.  What we will talk about is what is required for the Private Cloud certification, and what we need to tackle in the next 60 days.

So let’s break down the certification.  The certification is made up two parts.  The first part is the MCSA as a base level of knowledge.  Since my focus (due to existing passed exams) will be on the Private Cloud exams below, I am not going to go into depth on the MCSA requirements. Those can be found here.  Just a quick note:  If you currently possess the MCITP: SA or MCITP:EA, you will be awarded the MCSA at the end of April.  Then you stack on two additional exams to achieve the MCSE: Private Cloud. Those exams are as follows:

Exam 70-247 - Configuring and Deploying a Private Cloud with System Center 2012.

    • This exam is required, but you may take another exam, 70-659, in its place until January 31st, 2013. After that time, 70-247 will be the only exam to satisfy the requirement
    • Audience Profile:  “Candidates for this exam use System Center 2012 products to install and configure a private cloud solution. They design, configure, and deploy the underlying infrastructure fabric of networking, storage, and compute resources. They standardize and automate configuration and deployment of applications. Candidates for this exam have Windows Server, Active Directory, System Center 2012, security, high availability, fault tolerance, and networking experience in an enterprise environment, basic Microsoft SQL Server and Windows PowerShell knowledge, and application configuration experience. Candidates are also familiar with ITIL and MOF concepts.” Exam 70-247 Overview, Microsoft

Exam 70-246:  Monitoring and Operating a Private Cloud with System Center 2012

    • This exam is a required component of the certification.
    • Audience Profile:  “Candidates for this exam have Windows Server, System Center 2012, security, high-availability, fault tolerance, and networking experience in an enterprise environment, candidates should also have basic Microsoft SQL Server and Windows PowerShell knowledge, and application configuration experience. Candidates are also familiar with ITIL and MOF concepts. These candidates might be the Active Directory Administrator, Virtualization Administrator, Enterprise Administrator, or System Center Administrator for their organizations.” Exam 70-246 Overview, Microsoft

Exam 70-659:  TS:  Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Virtualization

    • This exam can be taken in place of 70-247 until January 31st, 2013. After that time, 70-247 will be the only exam to satisfy the requirement.
    • Audience Profile: ”Candidates for this exam should have more than one and a half years of experience working with Windows Server 2008, including Windows Server 2008 R2 environments, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, and Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 as virtualization administrators. Additionally, candidates have experience with server virtualization products and technologies, including Hyper-V, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, Windows PowerShell 2.0, and System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007.”  Exam 70-659 Overview, Microsoft

So depending on where you are at with your certification track, it is a total of five exams revolving around Server 2008 R2, Windows Virtualization, and System Center 2012.  All exams will be available at Microsoft TechEd for 30% off.  Given this promotion, it’s best to get your exams scheduled soon.  Exam registration goes live soon so click here for more information.

So what do you think?  Are you up for the Challenge?  Do you have what it takes to take your career to the next level?

If you answered yes to any of these, join us for the next 60 days as we work towards becoming MCSE: Private Cloud certified.  We are currently working on a place to collaborate on the Born to Learn website.  You can also join the conversation on twitter by following @michaelbender as well as adding our hashtag, #60days2MCSE, onto your tweets.  Feel free to ask questions, make comments, or share information via twitter or the blog comments below.

  • Introducing “Ask a Certification Expert!” You have questions? We have answers!

As part of 20 Years| 20 Ways , Microsoft’s year-long celebration of its first 20 years of certification, my team (in case you’re new to this blog, my team is responsible for developing and maintaining our certification exams) decided to have a little fun and bust a few myths about our exams. Many of you know that I love talking about our certification exams—how they are designed, developed, maintained, and the psychometric magic that is needed to ensure they are valid measures of your skills—even more, though, I love talking to our candidates and answering their questions. So, we’re taking this to a whole new level through a little project called “Ask a Certification Expert.”

Through a series of short videos, my teammates and I will be answering your questions about Microsoft’s exams and certification program. We will be posting a video each week with the answer to a burning question that our candidates have been asking, starting with “Are Microsoft’s certification exams getting more difficult?” (Hint: The answer is ‘yes’… Want to know how and why? Better check out the video!). Future videos will answer questions like:

    ·         I thought 700 meant 70%...So, what does 700 really mean?!

    ·         I studied the training materials, but I still didn’t pass. Why?

    ·         Hey, that's not a multiple choice question!  What's new?

    ·         I can write a better question than that!  How do I get involved?

Not only will these videos answer your questions, they will include some interesting “pop-up” facts with tidbits you won’t get anywhere else (think pop-up videos—very, very cool and fun).

Although we are starting with the questions that we’ve been asked most often, we really want to answer your questions. Do you have a question that we could make into a video segment for “Ask a Certification Expert”? Submit it to [email protected].  We have answers, and we really do want to share them with you!

So, do you want to know how and why our exams are getting more difficult? Or, maybe you’re just curious what a psychometrician looks like. Or, maybe you want to learn an interesting fact about a psychometrician named “Liberty.” Whatever your motivation, check out these new videos and submit your question today!

  • MCSE: Reinvented for the Cloud

This is an important moment in the history—and future—of Microsoft certifications.  Candidates for Microsoft certifications -- and those who might employ them—are increasingly saying they need cloud services as part of the job descriptions.  Today’s technical professionals need to understand a broader array of technologies in order to plan and design optimal solutions.  It’s clear that our certification candidates must delve deeper in order to integrate public cloud, private cloud, and on-premise technologies effectively.

To accommodate these changes, we have reinvented Microsoft’s certification program.  Our new certifications for IT professionals and developers are tiered in three levels—Associate, Expert, and Master.  The flagship certification, and destination for most IT professionals, is the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert or MCSE.  It carries a familiar abbreviation, but has been “reinvented” to focus on the depth and breadth needed for cloud, on-premise, and hybrid solutions.  Similarly, MCSD, or Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer, is our new expert level developer certification.
