Joe Desbonnet demonstrates a "Poor Man's NFC" proof-of-concept with an Arduino and an Android phone:



The coolest part? This uses the phone's magnetometer to pull off the trick. Desbonnet's blog post  about the project is fantastic and well worth the read.
