How to install the AdventureWorks2008R2 OLTP database

Note: After attaching AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf, you will need to remove the ldf log file listed below the mdf file.

This release is dedicated to the Adventure Works sample databases and related scripts that ship for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. This release uses the AdventureWorks2008R2 and AdventureWorksDW2008R2 sample databases (added on 3/30/2012), without filestream. These databases cannot be installed on any version of SQL Server other than SQL Server 2008 R2.

You can also download a script and .csv files (added on 3/30/2012) to install the databases from script.
For details on how to install the AdventureWorks20008R2 OLTP database, the AdventureWorks20008R2 DW database, or to install either of these from script, see the SQL Server Samples Readme.

I succesfully attached using: 1) Open SQL Management Studio 2) Right-click "Databases", select "Attach" 3) Select Adventure Works DW MDF file but remove the LOG file, click OK. The log file will be recreated after the database is attached.

Hi, How to attach AdventureWorksDW2008R2 Data File: 1. After download copy the mdf file to a known location (I copied to E:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER2008\MSSQL\DATA\AdventureWorksDW2008R2_Data.mdf) 2. I am trying to have Adventure works database in my instance which I was unable to do even after my second visit because of there is no clarity and lack of simple steps to do the same. Kind of frustrated where these basics are getting ignored with little attention for laying foundation to get inducted into main stream ( A new users sorely missing this).

Quick and easy. to attach the mdf use..... USE [master] GO CREATE DATABASE [AdventureWorks2008R2] ON ( FILENAME = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQL01\MSSQL\DATA\AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf' ) FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG GO -- change the leafname and/or filename as appropriate

I don't understand why you put a data file out there (Adventureworks2008R2.mdb) if you can't simply attach to it. I attach to it and get some kind of log error. What is that about?

Instructions were not clear enough for a beginner but the user comments helped me to get it installed properly. Thanks for everyones comments they helped. Thank you Microsoft for offering this database for us to use and practice on.

I can't beleive how difficult getting a sample database setup. I give up, i'll just use Oracle to learn SQL.

The AdventureWorksLT2008R2 Database architecture is not supported by Entity Framework. Do not waste your time. Microsoft needs to prove that the new functionalities inherent in SQL Server 2008 Rx and SQL Server 2012 are fully supported by their own frameworks and/or platforms.

Right click on data file and click unprotect Then also add special permission or make sure you have full access to the file (which was causing my issue while attaching) And attach in command line, it s easier EXEC sp_attach_db @dbname = N'MyDB', @filename1 = N'd:\SQL\AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf' it will complain about ldf but will create one

If you are trying to attach db the file, remove LDF from below section and try. it works

Try this: Remove the log file from the Database details list, after then you can attach the database.

I agree that this sucks - There is no log file so I could not install the database. Then - tried to use a Script to CREATE AdventureWorks2008R2 from the Downloaded Excel files containing the Tables Data - but the attached script would not run. Got the Variables declared but then the Run Time Substitution didn't appear to work - even with all the variables now redefined to include the "@" :-(

There must be 2 conditions completed to install these database 1. Full-text Filter Daemon Launcher installed and running 2. Filestream future configured: (to enable filestream type this command) EXEC sp_configure 'filestream_access_level', 2; GO 3. Do the 4 point from the instruction on this page.

Doesn't work with the Developer version (10.3.5500), which errors out identifying the developer version as a server which "supports version 655 and earlier". DeepaRaveendran had the same issue last year.

How do you restore this MDF file in SQL 2008? I'm using SQL 2008 R2 x64 Standard edition on a Windows 2008 R2 x64. Seems like this should work, but I just get this error: The media family on device 'C:\Users\sharepointadmin\Desktop\AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf' is incorrectly formed. Great Work. Initially I was getting error because I put the file in D drive. Then I put the mdf in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.KJ\MSSQL\DATA and it was successful

I don't see a mention anywhere that this database has a case sensitive collation!!!

In order for this to work for me as soon as the file was finished downloading I right-clicked the file and selected "Properties". Then I selected the "Unblock" button within the properties window. Then and only then was I able to attach it to my SQL Server 2008 R2 instance.

The AdventureWorks2008R2 database installed fine, is there a place where I can get the AdventureWorksDW2008R2 database without Filestream as well? I could not find it on the site. I'm using the 32 bit version of SQL Server 2008 R2 on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine so I cannot enable FILESTREAM

The database 'AdventureWorks2008R2' cannot be opened because it is version 661. This server supports version 655 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported. I get the above error when i try to attach this AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf Please provide me a solution

NOTE: Make sure you have FILESTREAM Enabled within your SQL Server 2008 instance. If you do not, this extraction and setup process will not create the databases in your SQL Server Object Explorer. If you do not know how to enable FILESTREAM for your server, hit F1 (to open Help), and type in "Enable FILESTREAM". - I'd put it here, but I am limited to the number of characters.

Hmmm...the command fails: Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1 Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". Seems like SQL server should be allowed to access its own files, but just to make sure, I tried to give it full control. Windows rejects this despite the fact that I'm an admin?

Hi Carl. Sorry that you're having problems. It may be that the file did not download cleanly. Download the file again and then try to attach. Also, if you have multiple versions of SQL Server installed, make sure you're connected to the 2008R2 instance. Regards, Gail Erickson SQL Server Documentation

This is not working. I have Sql Server Express R2 (10.50.1600.1) on Windows 7. Full Text is running This is what I get. Either with the script or through the UI to attach the DB. The header for file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\...\AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect. What am I missing?
