Microsoft Project Server and SharePoint Server 2007 and 2010 October 2012 CU Announcement

I am pleased the announce the release of (some of) the 2012 October Cumulative Update for Project 2010, Project Server 2007, Project Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint Server 2010.  There are no fixes affecting Project 2007 client this cycle.  Some of the packages listed below will be delayed, as noted. Feel free to open a support case if you have any questions around this or need assistance getting these patches deployed.  Remember that this release for the 2010 products, like the August 2012 Cumulative Update, has a hard requirement on Service Pack 1 – see notes below.

    *** Update 11/7/2012 - the 2007 Server packages are now available ***

*** Update 11/14/2012 - see http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2012/11/14/project-server-2007-issue-installing-the-october-2012-cumulative-update.aspx for details on some issues found with the 2007 CU ***

    Project and Project Server 2010

This include a number of fixes, so Microsoft strongly recommends that you test this in a test environment based on your production environment before putting this fix live in production.

The article below provides information on how to deploy the Project Server Cumulative Update.

You can read about the fixes included in the Project and Project Server August CUs from the following articles:

Server Rollup Package(Recommended): Delayed for a couple more weeks *** Update 11/15/2012 - now available ***

More information on deploying the Cumulative Update:

The article below provides information on how to deploy the Project Server Cumulative Update.

    Updates for Project Server 2010

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/projectserver/gg176680.aspx

As Project Server 2010 is now based on SharePoint Server 2010 we strongly recommend that you install the Project Server 2010 Server Rollup Package as there are a large number of individual server packages for SharePoint Server. The Project Server 2010 Server Rollup Package contains all the patches released in this Cumulative Update for SharePoint Foundation Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2010 and Project Server 2010.

As mentioned above, and at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2012/07/18/project-server-2010-from-august-2012-cumulative-update-onwards-you-will-also-need-to-load-sp1.aspx – the August Cumulative Update requires your client and server to already be at the Service Pack 1 (SP1) level – if you get a message saying the patch does not apply to your system then this may be the reason.

SP1 for the Project Server 2010 can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=26636

SP1 for the Project Professional 2010 client can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26635 for the 32-bit and http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26627 for the 64-bit.

For those accustomed to Project Server 2007 Cumulative Updates, you should note that the MOSS Server Rollup Package does not contain the Project Server patches.   As in Project Server 2007, the Server Rollup Packages are much larger but they will greatly simplify your Project Server patch deployment.

    Client Installation:

Installation of the client patch is straightforward and is the same as it was in Project 2007. The instructions for installing the client patch are below.

NOTE: Microsoft strongly recommends testing within a NON-Production environment prior to rollout.

    1. Download the hotfix from the link in the KB Article.

    2. Extract the patch package by running the .exe file that you downloaded.

    3. Run the extracted .exe file to apply the patch to your Project Professional/Standard client.

Project Server 2007 (*** See note above for details of a problem found with the Project Server 2007 CU***)

This include a number of fixes, so Microsoft strongly recommends that you test this in a test environment based on your production environment before putting this fix live in production.

You can read about the fixes included in the August CU from the following articles:

    Server Rollup Packages:

Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 cumulative update server hotfix package (WSS server-package): October 30, 2012

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2687535

Description of the SharePoint Server 2007 cumulative update server hotfix package (MOSS server-package): October 30, 2012 Delayed for a couple more weeks

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2687533

    Individual Product Packages:

Description of the Project Server 2007 hotfix package (Pjsrvapp-x-none.msp, Pjsrvwfe-x-none.msp): October 30, 2012 Delayed for a couple more weeks

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2687536

There are no fixes for Project 2007 in this cycle.

More information on deploying the Cumulative Update:

The article below provides information on how to deploy the Project Server Cumulative Update.

Deploy cumulative updates (Project Server 2007)

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd239177.aspx

Server Pack 3 for Project and Project Server 2007 has been released.  While not required for the August CU, we strongly recommend that you install it as it contains a number of patches to improve performance and reliability.  The following blog goes into more detail about SP3.

Office 2007 and SharePoint 2007 Service Pack 3 Availability

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_sustained_engineering/archive/2011/10/25/office-2007-and-sharepoint-2007-service-pack-3-availability.aspx

SP3 may be optional, however, Service Pack 2 for both WSS and Office Servers 2007 are required for this Cumulative Update. The KB articles below provide information on how to download and install SP2 if you have not already done so.

Description of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 and of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack SP2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953338

Description of 2007 Microsoft Office servers Service Pack 2 and of 2007 Microsoft Office servers Language Pack Service Pack 2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953334

The Server CU is released in two different versions. The first version is in Individual Packages specific to a particular product like WSS and Project Server. These are smaller downloads but they do not include language packs or patches for other products so patches for those products would have to be downloaded and installed separately.

The second version is the Server Rollup Packages. This is a set of two rollup packages which contains all the fixes for WSS, Project Server and MOSS. These packages should be used when MOSS is part of the deployment and/or you have language packs installed. The Server Rollup Packages are much larger but they will greatly simplify MOSS patch deployment.

Client Installation: (For reference – there were no fixes released for Project 2007 client in this cycle)

In order to install this hotfix, you will need to have Microsoft Project 2007 SP2 installed on the client.

Description of Office Project 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and of Office Project Language Pack 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953326

Once we know that SP2 is installed, you will install the hotfix by performing the following steps:

NOTE: Microsoft strongly recommends testing within a NON-Production environment prior to rollout.

    1. Download the hotfix from either the KB Article.

    2. Extract the patch package by running the .exe file that you downloaded.

    3. Run the extracted .exe file to apply the patch to your Project Professional/Standard SP1 client.

Feel free to open a support incident at http://support.microsoft.com if you run into any issues with the installation and we will be happy to help!

Great News (Finally)! The latest Cumulative Updates (CU) for Project and Project Server 2010 and 2007 have been released.  We still refer to this as the August Cumulative update – although several of the dates actually say September – and the descriptions tend to says Hotfix rather than Cumulative Update.  Feel free to open a support case if you have any questions around this or need assistance getting these patches deployed.  Remember that this release for 2010 is the first cumulative update that has a hard requirement on Service Pack 1 – see notes below.

Server Pack 3 for Project and Project Server 2007 has been released.  While not required for the April CU, we strongly recommend that you install it as it contains a number of patches to improve performance and reliability.

    Client Installation:

In order to install this hotfix, you will need to have Microsoft Project 2007 SP2 installed on the client.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953326

Once we know that SP2 is installed, you will install the hotfix by performing the following steps:

NOTE: Microsoft strongly recommends testing within a NON-Production environment prior to rollout.

    1. Download the hotfix from either the KB Article.

    2. Extract the patch package by running the .exe file that you downloaded.

    3. Run the extracted .exe file to apply the patch to your Project Professional/Standard SP1 client.

Microsoft Project Server and SharePoint 2007 and 2010 October CU 2011 Announcement

The October 2011 Cumulative Updates for Microsoft Project and Project Server 2010 have now been released. The 2007 Server packages that were withdrawn for a short period are now re-built and available.

As always, we want to encourage you to test any CUs with a recent copy of your production database before deploying into production so that we can catch any problems, and fix them, in test before they start impacting a live environment.

For 2010 we should also remind you that we recommend applying Service Pack 1 - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh272536.aspx. This article makes many references to the June CU – the October CU is cumulative so does contain all that was shipped in the June and August CU so if you haven’t installed the June or August CU then you can just install the October CU (and SP1). More details of SP1 can be found at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/project/archive/2011/06/28/announcing-the-release-of-service-pack-1-sp1-for-microsoft-project-and-project-server-2010.aspx and the downloads listed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2510766. Q&A from the SP1 TechNet webcast can be found at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2011/07/11/project-server-2010-sp1-and-june-cu-questions-and-answers.aspx.

So without any further ado, here is the information:

    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack SP3 2526305

For full details and more specific link see the Office Sustained Engineering blog at http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_sustained_engineering/archive/2011/10/25/office-2007-and-sharepoint-2007-service-pack-3-availability.aspx

*** Update – just heard there are a couple of issues being investigated with the 2007 Office packages – this affects the MOSS Server package 2596540 (which is the roll up that also includes the Project Server 2007 fix below), and a Project 2007 fix that was specifically  aimed at implementations of Project 2007 and Office 2010 where Visual Reports would not work.  Also corrected the description below from 2010 to 2007 – sorry…  Both of the updates below are unaffected. ***   All affected updates have been re-released 11/1/2011

The October 2011 Cumulative Update for Project and Project Server 2007 can be found at:

A few answers to questions I’m am sure are on the tips of your tongues (as we have all been asking them internally)

    • SP3 does not contain the October CU, but contains all fixes up to the August 2011 CU – so to get fully up to date you need to load both SP3 and the October CU.
    • SP3 contains all of the fixes previously released via cumulative updates up to and including the August 2011 CU plus any applicable security fixes released.  If you are up to date with updates and CU’s then SP3 will not be adding anything you don’t already have.
    • October CU and SP3 can be loaded in either order – and for the server you could add both before running the configuration wizard.
    • You do need to be at least at SP2 to load the October CU – or preferably SP3

Thanks to Rob and Adrian for the information – and Adrian and I (mostly Adrian) will include SP3 in our regular Cumulative Update webcast – 11/8/2011.

Microsoft Project Server and SharePoint 2007 and 2010 August CU 2011 Announcement

The August 2011 Cumulative Updates for Microsoft Project and Project Server 2010 have now been released.  *** Update 9/7/2011 - rollup package now posted **** We did find a late issue with the SharePoint Foundation CU during our testing which we have identified and will need to re-build.  This does however mean that the server rollup patches will be delayed too – as they contain the SharePoint Foundation bits.  The current estimate is that these rollup packages will be available late next week.  The server rollup patch is the preferred patch because it contains the fixes for all of the server technologies used by Project Server 2010  The individual server patch is available should you need an August fix for Project Server before next week.  It should also allow you to start testing the Project specific fixes right away.

This delay does not affect the August 2011 Cumulative Update for Project and Project Server 2007.

As always, we want to encourage you to test any CUs with a recent copy of your production database before deploying into production so that we can catch any problems, and fix them, in test before they start impacting a live environment.

We should also remind you that we recommend applying Service Pack 1 - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh272536.aspx.  This article makes many references to the June CU – the August CU is cumulative so does contain all that was shipped in the June CU so if you haven’t installed the June CU then you can just install the August CU (and SP1).

For those accustomed to Project Server 2007 Cumulative Updates, you should note that the MOSS Server Rollup Package does not contain the Project Server patches. You will need to make sure that you install the MOSS + Project Server Rollup Package (the link is provided below).

    Client Installation:

In order to install this hotfix, you will need to have Microsoft Project 2007 SP2 installed on the client.

Microsoft Project Server and SharePoint 2007 and 2010 June CU 2011 announcement

I know this announcement is coming a little late, but with the release of SP1 and all the other stuff going on we just realized (with a nudge from Treb) that we had missed posting the usual CU message.  Also there was a refresh of the Project and SharePoint Server 2010 June CU package shortly after the initial release – so make sure if you downloaded or applied these early after the initial release that you have the final release (14.0.6106.5002)  On the the announcement:

The TechNet Webcast for SP1 for Project and Project Server 2010 also included a round-up of the fixes in the June CU and is available at https://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?culture=en-US&EventID=1032487727&CountryCode=US.  I also posted the Q&A coming from the webcast at Project Server 2010- SP1 and June CU Questions and Answers – and also posted about an issue identified just after the release of SP1 and the June CU at Project Server 2010- SP1 and June 2011 CU–FormatException when trying to provision a PWA site.

If you are loading the June CU for 2010 we would also encourage you to load SP1 – see Announcing The Release Of Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft Project and Project Server 2010 for full details, and particularly the TechNet article at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh272536.aspx - Deploy Service Pack 1 for Project Server 2010

Project Server Best practices for virtualization

I know of lot of you are virtualizing our application, this recent article for SharePoint 2010 is a great reminder of best practices for Project Server 2010 as well: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh295699.aspx

    1. Use hardware-assisted virtualization
    2. Enable hyper-threading on processors that support this technology
    3. Configure Non-Uniform Memory Access correctly
    4. Configure the Hyper-V host for optimal performance
    5. Maintain version compatibility for integration services
    6. Determine storage options that are based on virtual machine roles and workloads
    7. Configure general virtual machine settings for performance and stability
    8. Do not use snapshots in a production environment
    9. Design the virtual topology for optimal performance
    10. Do not overload the Hyper-V host
    11. Do not run resource intensive jobs on the Hyper-V host and virtual machines at the same time

Project Server 2010: Removed the manage site services permission and can’t get it back?

There is a new permission in Project Server 2010 called Manage Site Services which controls access to those services which operate at the farm level – such as OLAP services etc.  We have discovered a scenario where you cannot re-enable the Server Level permission “Manage Site Services” once you have cleared the permission.  Removing this permission prevents the ability to change the Administrators Group, manage Queue Settings, perform Active Directory Synchronization, manage Event Handlers and Build OLAP Cubes.

In order to work around the problem, you will need to run the following SQL command against the Published Database:

    UPDATE dbo.MSP_WEB_SECURITY_ORG_PERMISSIONS

    SET WSEC_ALLOW = 1, WSEC_DENY = 0

    where WSEC_FEA_ACT_UID = '55FE20B7-73D6-421A-A0A8-41B8A482AE8B'

This script will re-enable the Manage Site Services permission for PWA so that you will be able to perform the blocked tasks.

So if you have managed to lock yourself out of these permissions this is the answer.  We don’t normally suggest direct database access – but this is one of those times when it is the only way.

For those accustomed to Project Server 2007 Cumulative Updates, you should note that the MOSS Server Rollup Package does not contain the Project Server patches. You will need to make sure that you install the MOSS + Project Server Rollup Package (the link is provided below).

    Project and Project Server 2007

This include a number of fixes, so Microsoft strongly recommends that you test this in a test environment based on your production environment before putting this fix live in production.

The article below provides information on how to deploy the Project Server Cumulative Update.

You can read about the fixes included in the April CU from the following articles:

Deploy cumulative updates (Project Server 2007)

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd239177.aspx

Service Pack 2 for both WSS and Office Servers 2007 are required for this Cumulative Update.

    Client Installation:

In order to install this hotfix, you will need to have Microsoft Project 2007 SP2 installed on the client.

    1. Download the hotfix from either the KB Article or by using the information at the end of this email.

Microsoft Project Server 2007/2010 Internet Explorer 9 Support

*** Update November 2011 *** With the recent release of Project Server Service Pack 1 and recent IE9 updates, Project 2010 is now fully compatible with IE9

Internet Explorer (IE) 9 was launched on Monday, March 14th. We have been working very closely with the Internet Explorer (IE) team to ensure that our customers can take advantage of all the great new features that the new IE release offers. After testing the different versions of Microsoft Project Server with IE 9, here is an update on IE 9 support status:

    • Project Server 2010 was tested and supports IE 9.
    • The main scenarios and functionalities of Project Server 2007 Service Pack 2 were tested and support IE 9. Project Server 2007 SP1 and Project Server 2007 may also support IE 9.
    • The main scenarios and functionalities of Project Portfolio Server 2007 Service Pack 2 were tested and support IE 9. Project Portfolio Server 2007 SP1 and Project Portfolio Server 2007 may also support IE 9.

There is a small known issue with editing some of the grids in Project Server 2007 and Project Server 2010. When the entire contents of an editable cell are deleted, that cell becomes un-editable until the page is refreshed. Therefore, when modifying the content of a cell, you must ensure that all the content of the cell is not completely removed. To completely replace the contents of the cell, select the whole text and replace that with the new string. This issue affects the grid on the following pages:

    Microsoft Office Project Server 2007

    Microsoft Project Server 2010

    • My Tasks
    • My Timesheet
    • Proposals and Activities > New Activity

    • Server Settings > Enterprise Custom Fields and Lookup Tables > Edit Lookup Table > Lookup table group
    • Server Settings > Line Classifications
    • Server Settings > Time Reporting Periods à Create Periods
    • Server Settings > Cube Configuration > Calculated Measures group
    • Server Settings > Administrative Time
    • Status Report Request > Sections group
    • Server Settings > Enterprise Custom Fields and Lookup Tables à Edit Lookup Table > Lookup table group
    • Server Settings > Line Classifications
    • Server Settings > Time Reporting Periods > Create Periods
    • Server Settings > OLAP Database Management > Configuration > Calculated Measures group
    • Server Settings > Administrative Time

There are also known issues with changing a project owner in the project information page, and adding or removing project fields in project detail pages. We are working across IE and Microsoft Project teams to fix all these issues soon. We will update when the fixes are available.
