Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the SkyDrive app for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Can I view files and folders that other people have shared with me?

If someone goes to SkyDrive.com and shares a file or folder with you by sending a link in email, you can view that file or folder in the SkyDrive app. Tap or click the arrow at the top of the screen, and then choose Shared. When items are shared, it might take a few minutes for them to appear here.

How do I view Office files that I've opened recently?

Tap or click the arrow at the top of the screen, and then choose Recent documents.

How do I upload and download files?

To upload files on your PC to SkyDrive, open the location you want to upload them to, open the app commands, and then tap or click Upload. Browse to find the files you want to upload, tap or click to select them, and then tap or click Add to SkyDrive.

To download files on SkyDrive to your PC, swipe down on them or right-click them, and then tap or click Download.

How can I open or save files on SkyDrive from another app?

In the other app, choose the command to open or save. Tap or click the arrow next to Files, and then choose SkyDrive in the list.

How can I share files and folders on SkyDrive with other apps?

By using the Share charm, you can do things like sending an email message with a link to a photo on SkyDrive.

  1. In the SkyDrive app, swipe down on the file or folder you want to share or right-click it.

  2. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Share.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Share.)

  3. Tap or click the app you want to use to share. For example, tap or click the Mail app to send the file or folder as a link in email.

You can also share files from other apps (such as Photos) with SkyDrive to upload them to your SkyDrive. For more info about using the charms, see Search, share, change settings, and more

How can I search for a file on SkyDrive?

You can search for a file on SkyDrive the same way you search for items in other apps. Follow these steps from anywhere in Windows:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)

  2. Tap or click SkyDrive in the app list.

Do I need the desktop version of the SkyDrive app?

If you want a copy of your SkyDrive files and folders saved on your PC and kept in sync with SkyDrive.com and other computers, you need to install the SkyDrive desktop app for Windows. For more info about the desktop app, see SkyDrive desktop app for Windows: Frequently asked questions. Note that the SkyDrive desktop app can't be installed on Windows RT.

Can I use the SkyDrive app if I don't sign in to my PC with a Microsoft account?

Yes. If you sign in to your PC with a local account, you just need to sign in to SkyDrive when you open the app.
