I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with Microsoft’s Robert Duffner recently for his “Thought Leaders in the Cloud” Series (the conversation is available here). We talked for about 30 minutes about cloud computing blunders (something we’ve had plenty of experience with at SlideShare ;->) and the benefits of hybrid architectures.
I think it’s important for people to realize that just because you’re using the cloud doesn’t mean you need to use it for everything … there’s a sweet spot, and it’s important to always use the best tool for the job.
Other things we talked about included:
• The scale of SlideShare (45 million visitor per month)
• Two kinds of expensive missteps with the cloud
• Aligning SaaS revenue with cloud costs
• Concrete examples of the benefits of hybrid architectures
• The higher administrative burden of infrastructure as a service
• The opportunity to build cloud hosted special purpose application services
• Front end complexity and back end cost risks

I’m not sure why anyone would want a Cloud service. If you want to share your private files with hackers and host then I could understand. Personally it sounds like another money making scheme from computer companies to make additional $$$. With micro SD cards holding 64GBs why would anyone pay a company to hold your information? With today’s Smartphones you can do anything a so called Cloud service can do, but you can do it faster since it doesn’t require downloading.
