Key Highlights from Capacity Europe 2013
Magnus Lindkvist, Celebrity Futurologist and Opening Speaker
Capacity Europe 2013 had an explosive opening with internationally acclaimed trendspotter Magnus Lindkvist, who challenged our conceptions of the future and the next ‘X.’ He began by outlining the fractured wholesale industry model, with the clear message that carriers need to create or compete to survive in this space. Advocating the latter, Lindkvist moved to demonstrate the need to break through linear thought processes and encourage exponential development. “When I was growing up, we thought the future would bring us flying cars and instead we got a Korean man dancing to ‘Gangnam Style’ ” demonstrating that the future is impossible to predict.
Continuing to champion the potential of the digital world, he claimed that the ‘mobile killer app’ is yet to be invented and that failure is a feature of experimentation that will lead you to success. The presentation ended on the assertion that carriers need to reclaim their territory to drive the future of technology and think outside the box in order to innovate.
Keynote Panel Discussion: The Explosive Debate between Carriers and OTT players
The fiery keynote panel discussion brought to the foreground the troubled relationship between carriers and OTT players and began with a controversial statement from David Temkin, Director of Network Architecture from NETFLIX who claimed ‘without content there is no need for a network.’ The carriers, including Alexandre Pébereau, ORANGE, Holger Magnussen, DEUTSCHE TELEKOM ICSS and Cengiz Oztelcan, TURK TELEKOM INTERNATIONAL, hit back by maintaining that both industries relied on each other to exist and that a more balanced business model was needed in order to find a mutually beneficial and sustainable arrangement.
Télécoms Sans Frontières 5km Run
For the second year running, team Capacity took up the challenge of completing a 5km run in support for Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF). In the early hours of Tuesday morning, runners met in the cold to raise money for this worthy cause. Congratulations to Rick Evans from CENTURYLINK who won the race and thanks to all runners and donators. Special thanks goes to IBASIS who sponsored the run.
