The Land Grab of IOT

One of the struggles we have in talking about M2M is everyone wants to change the category. For example, M2M itself is a term that fits the mobile carriers well, but not all the sensors use cellular technology. Cisco is pushing the Internet of Everything [IoE] and Europe has pushed the term Internet of Things [IoT].
Well based on the tweets at Mobile World Congress the defacto term is definitely IoT since IOT as a tweet was 50% larger than the next category which was wearables.
The problem is that no one term really works well for all the industry.

The Buy Side of Energy Still is a Dim Bulb

I never know what to write as an article and what to just comment on, so I am going to experiment with a little of both.
On the trip home from TMC's offices in CT (a great place to visit particularly if you want to shoot some video with me). I was listening to the NPR discussion about Incandescent, CFLs and LED lighting.
In effect, what they were saying was the move away from incandescent lighting had been a miserable failure, because consumers did not see any real benefit.
They were making the point that LED had a lot attributes such as color and duration that made it superior to CFL which was superior to incandescent.
CFL did not win the hearts and minds of consumers because their principal selling point was energy efficiency and the price of the savings was already built into the price. The efficiency was not sufficient to woe customers.
As I was listening I was seeing the parallel to smart meters and home energy products.

Google Gains B&N's Nook
May 3, 2013In today's Wall Street Journal they reported that Barnes and Noble is joining the Android market. The discussion was about the disappointing sales of the Nook in it's competition with Amazon's Kindle.
Normally, I don't write about consumer space but I think the issue of needing to consolidation in the Application venues is interesting. My general view point is that the Web should be its own App Store.
The Issues we Face in Deploying M2M over LTE
November 27, 2012Long Term Evolution [LTE] deployments include the phasing out of various 2G and 2.5G solutions. However, the trend to support the data needs of human users is undeniable. However when it comes to machines, its not clear what drivers are going to make M2M an LTE driver.
Like humans, video for M2M surveillance is probably the most likely.
