Favorite Collections

This past week we made a nice change to our collections, you can now arrange the people in your collections into any order you want, simply drag and drop.  Now Shawn can reorder his Artists collection (in our header) to show his favorite works of art or artists at the top of his collection.

In honor of this change we’ve decided to showcase some of our team’s favorite collections. They range from All Time Faves by Tony Conrad to Pascal’s collection of Storm Troopers. We hope you enjoy perusing them all below and get some inspiration to create your own collections of favorites on about.me

Traveling with about.me: Morocco

We’re touring Morocco this week, through the eyes of our about.me community members that call the country home. Located in the Maghreb region of north western Africa, the country has many diverse linguistic and cultural influences. Languages predominantly spoken in the country include Arabic, Berber and French.

Among those featured here, we have graphic designer, video tutorial maker and literature student Ayoub Kadri, president and founder of the Moroccan Association of Young Volunteers, Rafik Benlmadani. And who could forget our post header, Najlae Benmbarek, who runs a production company in Marrakesh.

Students of the Week

Last week we had a special focus on students as we participated in the Recess college tour. Going from Indiana University to Drexel University to University of Maryland to New York University to Cornell University gave us the chance to talk with a ton of students! We shared the ways in which an about.me page can help students start building a personal brand in addition to connecting to others and finding jobs.

I, personally, had a great time interacting with students like, David Guhl, in our header image and many others who not only showed enthusiasm and gave us great feedback for our prospective job tool, but were excited about and hearing from leading entrepreneurs like Tony Conrad and Cory Levy.

As I rode the tour bus from college to college (Fortunately we didn’t have to sleep in seats, we had bunks. Unfortunately, the mattress was a 3 inch thick piece of foam) I had the opportunity to interact with some other startups on the bus like Glide, Twine, Rad Pad and Whoseyourlandlord. All on the tour to pitch their sites and apps to college students, it was a jam-packed and exciting five days of meeting new people while on the road.

P.S. Don’t forget how important it is to give a great first impression through email, add your profile to your email signature so employers can link to your resume and learn more about you. Find out how to add your email signature in our FAQs.

Discover through People Search

In case you missed our newsletter yesterday, we’ve recently released a new “People Search” function on about.me to help you discover interesting members of the about.me community.

Connect with people around you

Did you just move to a new city? You can use search to discover and then connect with people in your area who share interests. For example, a friend just moved to Chicago and is really looking for new friends who share his love of food. So he went to Search and typed in Chicago, then food. Immediately, he discovered people in his area who he can connect with and maybe invite to write on his food blog. Not only that, but as he was exploring new pages he noticed they shared many more of his interests, giving him more reasons to connect.

Connect with potential clients or employers

Let’s say you live in L.A. and are looking to start a new project or maybe you have a company and are hoping to hire someone. Ideally you would get a designer and a developer but money is short so you’re trying to find someone who does both things. Typing in Los Angeles, designer and developer into search you instantly find a list potential collaborators like Charlotte Z. Fernandez who works as a freelancer.

Ensure people can find you in search

Most people remember location, work, and educational info, but too many overlook the importance of tags or interests.  A good set of tags will allow future collaborators, clients, or employers to find your page more easily and connect with you. As you reexamine your tags or consider adding new ones, ask yourself if you would you search for someone using those same terms. Not sure how to add tags to your page? Simply go to the Biography tab when you’re in Edit Mode and find the section called Interests. Then, add some tags to make it easier to discover and connect with new people. Happy Searching!

Voice actors on about.me

Today we’re shedding some light on people we hear all the time but almost never see, voice actors and actresses! Not only do we get to see them here but also learn about their personalities and what they do when they’re not lending their voices to our favorite characters.

Marc Scott, participates as a volunteer firefighter in his spare time, hence the outfit in the picture below! Then, of course, we have our header image of Tara Tyler who has worked as a radio production manager and creative services director for over 10 years!

Traveling with about.me: Andorra

This week on our world tour we head to Andorra. Europe’s sixth smallest country, it is located in the east Pyrenees mountains between Spain and France. Catalan speaking, the country has thrived in recent years due to a strong tourism industry. While its population numbers only around 80,000, it is called home by many amazing members of the about.me community!

Among them we have TedxAnd curator, Xus Boya, freelance photographer, David Vilanova and in the header of this post, chemistry, mathematics and physics professor, Toni Riestra.

Students of the Week

This week we are especially focused on students as we visit 5 college campuses with Recess.is. We’re going from Indiana University in Bloomington (Tony Conrad’s alma mater!) to Drexel University in Philadelphia to University of Maryland in College Park to NYU in New York City to our final stop at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

So far we’ve met tons of students from Indiana University, including Adam Sobol, and Drexel University and gotten them excited about the ease and usefulness of about.me for job searches, networking, or just for fun. Check out some of the students from each of these schools especially our post header, Muhammad Sattaur! Ofelia Mangen Adam Sobol Catherine Chen P.S. Don’t forget to add your profile to your email signature so employers can link to your resume and learn more about you. Find out how to add that email signture when you click here.
