I am using ArcView 10.0 and this was given to me via excel spreadsheet. The client asked to ID the damaged source points. First time needing to do this with excel. How do you convert this data from excel into a shapefile? I'm thinking the 53056257 is what may be needed?

Date -- Time -- Acquisition Name -- record Number -- Operator comments

04/11/2012 -- 15:45:5 -- UE-Vibe -- 53056257 -- EG6: BIGRUTS -- Fixed

You need some form of X/Y coordinates in your Excel table in order to convert it to a shapefile. Otherwise, it has no way to tell where to put the points. It could be lat/lon or Northing/Easting, but you need something. Another option could be if you already have another shapefile that you can join to the Excel file using unique identifiers among records/rows. the 53056257 may be 53°56'E, 62°57'N, but that's not very accurate, even for 2D seismic, so there must be higher accuracy coordinates somewhere else –  Ian May 1 '12 at 23:47
