Like most people, I expect a high quality of service from my broadcast provider(s). Whether I am watching sporting events or news coverage, I expect to do so without interruptions or delays to programming. If a broadcaster falls foul of this, the damage to reputation can be lasting, especially when there is so much competition – as consumers, we simply go elsewhere.
In order for broadcasters to earn our trust and most importantly, our loyalty, they must ensure that they deliver a consistently high quality viewing experience across live, traditional and on-demand services. The infrastructure that underpins the service is critical for the service the broadcaster delivers today, but must also have the capacity and flexibility to grow with consumer (and technology) demand.
A Colt customer that really understands the importance of this challenge is EUROVISION, the media industry's premier distributor and producer of live sports, news, music and culture. Its satellite and fibre network is the largest and most reliable in the world, directly connected to public service media everywhere. When you watch Europe’s major football leagues, UEFA matches, Formula One, Grand Slam tennis and many other of the world’s biggest sporting events, the live broadcast is transmitted from the venue to your broadcaster via the EUROVISION network.
EUROVISION has been a technology innovator, replacing satellite with fast, low-cost fibre for live transmissions wherever practicable, but the growth in bandwidth-hungry high-definition formats was putting pressure on its existing European SDH fibre network. With a clear objective of future-proofing their network, EUROVISION decided to move to Ethernet. Having carefully assessed potential suppliers for its European fibre network, the broadcaster decided to choose Colt’s Optimum Managed Networking service. Covering more than 60 sites across 20 countries, the move has quadrupled EUROVISION’s bandwidth capacity and reduced costs for the company by 20 per cent per year.
The transition was seamless, with customers experiencing the same quality of service throughout the migration. EUROVISION is now able to use our 10Gbps video transport capability, as well as respond to developments such as ultra-high definition TV, second-screen services and the growth in remote production.
Greater visibility over planned maintenance and the ability to respond to unforeseen issues quickly, both critical in the world of live broadcasting, were two further objectives for EUROVISION, which Colt’s simplified network management has enabled.
EUROVISION can now take advantage of our pan-European broadcast quality Ethernet infrastructure, which provides the reliability, capacity and flexibility it needs to meet both current and future needs for high-definition transmission. We are happy to be EUROVISION’s trusted partner as it continues to innovate and take advantage of the latest in broadcast-quality network technology.
