Technical

Administrators are users with the technical ability on Wikimedia Commons to:

  • delete and undelete images and other uploaded files, and to view and restore deleted versions
  • delete and undelete pages, and to view and restore deleted revisions
  • protect and unprotect pages, and to edit admin-protected pages
  • block and unblock users, individual IP addresses and IP address ranges
  • edit the MediaWiki namespace
  • rename files
  • add and remove usergroups
  • configure Upload Wizard campaigns
  • delete and undelete specific log entries and revisions of pages
  • import pages from other wikis
  • merge the history of pages
  • modify abuse filters
  • not create redirects from source pages when moving pages
  • override the spoofing checks and title or username blacklist
  • send a message to multiple users at once (massmessage)
  • use higher limits in API queries

These are collectively known as the admin tools.

Community role

Administrators are experienced and trusted members of the Commons community who have taken on additional maintenance work and have been entrusted with the admin tools by public consensus/vote. Different admins have different areas of interest and expertise, but typical admin tasks include determining and closing deletion requests, deleting copyright violations, undeleting files where necessary, protecting Commons against vandalism, and working on templates and other protected pages. Of course, some of these tasks can be done by non-admins as well.

Administrators are expected to understand the goals of this project, and be prepared to work constructively with others towards those ends. Administrators should also understand and follow Commons' policies, and where appropriate respect community consensus.

Apart from roles which require use of the admin tools, administrators have no special editorial authority by virtue of their position, and in discussions and public votes their contributions are treated in the same way as any ordinary editor. Of course, some admins are influential, but that derives not from their position as such but from the personal trust they have gained from the community.

Removal of administrator rights

Under the de-admin policy, administrator rights may be revoked due to inactivity or misuse of sysop tools.

Apply to become an administrator

First, go to Commons:Administrators/Howto and read the information there. Then come back here and make your request in the section below.

  • After clicking on the appropriate button and creating the subpage, copy the link to the subpage, e.g. "Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username", edit Commons:Administrators/Requests and paste it in at the top of the section, then put it in double curly brackets (e.g. {{Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username}} ) to transclude it.
  • If someone else nominated you, please accept the nomination by stating "I accept" or something similar, and signing below the nomination itself. The subpage will still need to be transcluded by you or your nominator.

Voting

Any registered user may vote here although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted. It is preferable if you give reasons both for Symbol support vote.svg Support votes or Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose ones as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to an argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.

Promotion normally requires at least 75% in favour, with a minimum of 8 support votes. Votes from unregistered users are not counted. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers.

Symbol neutral vote.svg Neutral comments are not counted in the vote totals for the purposes of calculating pass/fail percentages. However such comments are part of the discussion, may persuade others, and contribute to the closing bureaucrat's understanding of community consensus.

Result: Withdrawn This was effectively a surrogate de-adminship discussion (as would have been warranted after this AN/U discussion), and as also linked to that policy by Fastily in his introduction. There is also clearly sufficient concern voiced below to the point that Fastily no longer has the community support to continue as an administrator. Fastily has also simultaneously retired. Rather than leaving rights "under a cloud" and then going through our protracted inactivity de-admin procedures, it is best to remove the sysop bit and welcome a reapplication if Fastily returns.

I will also note in this closure the appreciation expressed by many below of Fastily's hard work as an administrator over his years of service. He has shown time and time again his committment to keeping our backlogs down, to automation of mindless housekeeping, to the legal robustness of our content collection, to community inclusiveness, and many other fields. He has been formally lauded time after time, and that is obviously an understatement of his true contributions given the thankless nature of the areas in which he worked. It would also do us all well to read over and reflect on his resignation message (indeed I am one of the bureaucrats who has in the past criticised some of his actions, and regret that it might have been experienced as hostility or contempt). Fastily, there is of course one promise in your resignation that we all hope you will break. Take whatever time you need to reflect and choose the best things to do with your time, and if in the future that again includes Commons, we will welcome you back. Greetings all,

As per recent events and my post here, I have elected to voluntarily initiate a request for reconfirmation of my admin status. As is customary, I will be voluntarily resigning adminship if there is a majority (>50%) endorsing this option.

Here is a short introduction for those who aren’t familiar with me. I have been an editor since 2009, an admin since 2011, uploaded over 6000 (self-created) media files, logged over 510,000 administrative actions, and performed ~68,000 edits. I also write computer code from time to time, and have in my spare time created a number of bots and tools: jwiki (a comprehensive MediaWiki API Client library), ArchiveBot (performs daily discussion page archival), and GlobalReplace (tool which assists with x-wiki file replacement).

If reconfirmed, I do intend to voluntarily abstain from use of block/unblock as it relates to controversial matters/users, as I can recount several instances where I have caused more drama than reduced or solved. My objective has only ever been to better foster a collegial working environment where all editors are able to contribute to the best of their abilities without experiencing hostility, trolling, and the like. I believe I have fallen short of this goal, tested the community’s patience, and failed to uphold the trust the community has placed in me to execute my position. I wish to offer a public apology to all and any I have offended and I hope that you all, as a community, are willing to trust me with a second chance to continue doing good for the project in my capacity as an admin.

With that said, I hope to return to quiet, gnome-sytyle editing/improvement, basic copyvio/missing-license/source/permission deletions, and development of my bots/scripts, jwiki, and GlobalReplace (also, I plan to start work on a youtube2commons/vimeo2commons import tool similar to flickr2commmons).

The wrong blocks and disrispecting procedures is just one of the problems mainly caused by a great lack of self reflection that Fastily has shown over the years. Using tools to clean up after edit wars in a way that is not just (deleting the file history), wheel warring over URAA, closing undel requests to quickly etc. Only now when the heat becomes to great I see a promise that the situation will change. He already lost my trust way before this incident when he unblocked Fry after two unblock requests denied by other admins, and especially given that his recents comments weren't exactly straightforward apologies I see absolutely no reason for him to be trusted (again) at this point. Fastily has done a lot of good things for Wikimedia, but the fundamental issue that I see is this: administrator tools are supposed to be used according to the consensus of the community, not for doing whatever the heck we want. I recognize that Fastily wishes to return to areas of less drama, but they can do that without the tools, and reapply when they have demonstrated more restraint. I am also concerned about unblocking the same editor 3 times: it has all the appearances of bias. The intemperate responses to legitimate concerns about their conduct is also disappointing. For what it's worth, I would support a de-admin/de-CU request for Magog the Ogre as well, as his actions were just as bad, and unbecoming for an administrator, especially one with access to private data. --Rschen7754 01:28, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

  • Symbol support vote.svg Support, despite the fact that Fastily has overruled decisions of mine. Fastily has made errors, true. I have undeleted some files he had deleted, so what? I (and probably others too) have done the same with files I had deleted. Fastily needs to improve cooperation with colleagues, true. The unblocking in the case at hand wasn't wise. However, the block of Fry was also borderline IMO, though fully understandable. Actually the Fry case reminds strongly to the case of Pieter Kuiper, who had produced very similar frictions within the community and among admins over a long time, until he was finally indef-blocked (with pain).
    Really, colleagues. In my country there is a saying, which could be translated as: Those who work little, makes few mistakes. Anyone who works a lot, makes many mistakes. Fastily has been the second most prolific admin over the last year, after INC, who recently resigned. Magog made the most blocks over the year as well as maintaining excellent tools to help us and now has taken a two-month self-exile. None of this is good for Commons because whilst we bicker and argue like prima donnas, the admin backlog is not going to sit quietly and wait for distractions like this to be over. I oppose any de-adminship of the parties involved unless there has been a breach of the Wikimedia terms of service. Despite the spat that appears to have sparked all of this drama both Fry and FDMS are productive contributors. My message to all four is: go back to contributing and try your best to engage in constructive dialogue. If you see a message that someone has left or they've done an edit that you disagree with, leave it for a couple of hours or even days, and then revisit it with a calm mind. There is absolutely no reason to be engaging in edit wars and block wars between ourselves when we have plenty of disingenuous users committing vandalism and copyright violations across the board. @Green Giant: If I understood your comment correctly, it's suggesting that I have been engaging (≠ involved) in an edit war and acting without a calm mind. Unless that's a misunderstanding, can you please elaborate what exactly I have done wrong and why I should have left this clear case of violations of the consensus-building process and rollback abuse for a couple of hours or even days? However, as far as I'm concerned, Fastily has absolutely missed such balance in closing deletion requests without reading arguments or at least putting an unrelated closing statement. I hope Fastily will be able to use his great working ability to some profitable and enjoyable task, but since adminship is a matter of trust, ATM I don't have such a big trust on him as admin to give him admin tools. We (he and I) have had run-ins, though that is not unexpected when opinions differ, and I would think that we have both had our share of rightness and wrongness from our positions. I don't want to lose Fastily's best administrative efforts, though I would like to see moderation of what he himself reflects as his lesser moments (which the busy advanced right holders will have, per Túrelio). As administrators we can get entrenched in our own opinions, and at times not listen sufficiently; take sides with those whose opinion aligns with our own; get frustrated when people do not see something as we do, when we think that the situation is bleeding obvious. We can act with a vested interest rather than exclude ourselves from a decision, and I see that Fastily acknowledges that maybe he has skirted into that zone. So I see some good signs from his own self-analyis, among the deeds that have caused the issue which dug the hole. If instead of merely counting number of admin actions, one actually looks at those actions, there are massive amounts of impropriety. Fastily, for example, regularly performs summary deletions of images for scope reasons, with no tagging by other editors, no notifying of the uploader, and no DRs. There are literally dozens in May 2015 (fast examples: File:کارخانه آسفالت 160 تن در ساعت.jpg; File: مجموعه سنگ شکن و کارخانه آسفالت.jpg; File:Dart-polizei.jpg; File:Mama-klein.jpg; File:Screen Shot 2015-04-26 at 4.31.34 AM.png; File:Banderin Malleco.png; File:Quintero Unido.png) and hundreds, if not thousands, historically. Fastily is at best careless; for example, in August 2012, an IP created a vandalism DR for File:2005 World Championships in Athletics 4.jpg.JPG; seven days later, Fastily (via FSII) closed the DR as delete (!!!) An editor finally noticed about three weeks ago, and filed an UnDR, which Fastily promptly closed; he then restored the image and deleted the DR, hiding it. This is not the only time Fastily has swept something under the rug and, even if somehow well-intended, a user with such a disposition towards transparency is not one I trust. To support the discussion, File:Copyright term.svg, which illustrates changes to the copyright term in the United States, was mentioned in the deletion discussion. I would like to present Thibaut120094 as a candidate for adminship on Commons. He has been very active on Commons for quite some time and expressed his interest to become an administrator here. I find the severe lack of admins rather troubling, as we desperately need more admins to deal with the bulky backlogs. He has been tagging copyright violations and participating in DRs actively. Additionally, he has a good understanding of various Commons' and copyright policies. Most importantly, he has a keen, conscientious and humble attitude.     Oh I completely forgot that photo, I uploaded it when I was a newbie. Japanese laws don't allow reproduction of artistic works in open places for commercial purposes. Japan has a copyright lifetime of 50 years after the death of the author and we don't know who the sculptor is and when he died. And knowing that the subject died in 1940, we can't know for sure if the sculpture is in public domain or not. So this image should be deleted. I'll open a DR.
