Unix & Linux Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for users of Linux, FreeBSD and other Un*x-like operating systems.. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I would like to know if there are any prerequisite requirements that needs to be taken into consideration in order to remote desktop between different desktop environments. For example, on my Ubuntu machine, it has the Unity desktop environment, but on my Debian machine it has the default desktop environment of Gnome. Should any remote-desktop software work between the two, or is there anything that would stop the remote-desktop working?

You might say try one, and I have, Remmina to be precise. I ran into some weird authentication issue that does not make any sense, along with a display that doesn't show properly. So I've tried to break down the problem into stages by trying to first understand if only certain desktop environments work with certain remote-desktop software?
