    We just got news that current SF State undergrad physics major and SF BUILD Scholar, Alexandra Shiffer, has been offered PhD admission at UCLA! During BUILD, Alex has worked in the Nakamura and Morin labs at UCSF.

    Dr. Ruth Ella Moore's work with tuberculosis bacteria helped her secure a job teaching 1st at Tennessee State then at Howard where, in 1955, she became department chair of bacteriology. Less known is she was also a talented seamstress & fashion designer.

    We also work with students outside of BUILD. Each fall led by UCSF grad students, BUILD hosts grad school application workshops where SF State students considering grad school attend. Today we're highlighting 2 students who got into their top grad school.

    More of our SF BUILD Scholars whom after finishing the SF BUILD program and graduating from SF State, continued their health research training at UCSF with various UCSF Principal Investigators and UCSF Labs.

    1 of 10 children, the son of a carpenter and a seamstress, Hopkins attended segregated schools growing up. At 15, he won a scholarship to Morehouse and later earned a medical degree at the University of Chicago, the only black student in his graduating class.

    It has been almost 3 years since we were introduced to Cohort 3 of the undergrad SF BUILD Research Scholars Program. We're glad to see the SF State/UCSF partnership has led to full-time opportunities at UCSF for our BUILD Scholars. Marsha is just one example.
