I just spoke to MSFT about the racist, sexist, ableist, elitist history and culture of higher ed + CS ed and how the pandemic has amplified it. For those who know this history, enjoy the solidarity; for those who don't, brace yourselves.

When this is all over, some of you may get a jury duty summons. Go. There will be protester cases. Helping protesters is most effective inside the courtroom. You'll likely be asked if you are capable of processing the facts the case without bias either way.

Can’t sit down. Can’t kneel down. Can’t raise a fist. Can’t stand still in peaceful protest. Can’t walk in peaceful protest. If you don’t understand this rage then you need to educate yourself because your part of the problem.

My friend recommended this page on how white supremacy culture shows up in the workplace. A number of the qualities there I didn't know were white supremacy culture! I've witnessed many of these, esp "Sense of Urgency" in many tech teams I've been on

not to be the white asshole who just got here five minutes ago & is already like "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS, GOD, MEGAN," but in researching my book I learned some stuff history class omitted which might be helpful to other white folks, specifically about Fred Hampton.

Tech has to exclude people. Tech has the power to change the world, for better and worse. Allowing racists and other supports of state violence into the tech community is what gives us discriminatory AI, surveillance, and shit like Github's ICE contract. Silence is violence.

Like everyone else, we’ve been applying to get a dog. We’ve been denied like 5 times now and it’s so hard not to take each one personally. The latest hasn’t even replied yet, and so I know it probably means “no,” but there’s still that small voice saying, “but maybe!” 🐶
