Review the following known issue before you install SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
SQL Server 2005 Books Online and the SQL Server Help documentation have not been updated for the SP4 release, and you might find references to SP3 as the current or latest release.
Because SQL Server 2005 Books Online has not been updated, it provides instructions to install the replication components from the CD. However, once you upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SP2 or greater, you must install the replication components from the Add or remove programs page of Control Panel. In Windows 7, the Control Panel item is called Programs and Features.

You need to be more specific about the VS 2005 SP1 requirement. VS2005 is installed with SQL2005 (pieces of it at least). It is this component that needs to be updated to SP1 to install SP4 right?
For a Client Tools install is VS2005 SP1 also needed?
Thanks
Chris
Chris,
We clarified above that you need to update VS2005 to include SP1. So the first answer is "yes." We're verifying the second question. Thanks!

Ed,
Aaron Bertrand sqlblog.com/.../sql-server-2005-sp4-is-here.aspx mentioned that he had installed SP4 without the VS2005 update beforehand. What does SP4 need that is in VS2005 SP1?
If there is a prerequisite to install VS 2005 SP1 prior to the installation of SQL2005/SP4, it would be very handy to have a link to that download site where this prerequisite is mentioned.
LindaLF_1, I added the link to VS 2005 SP1. Thank you for your feedback.
ChrisAVWood, I will verify the answer to your question. Thanks!

After further investigation, the note "Install Visual Studio 2005 SP1" was first submitted by a customer and included very specific circumstances that we don't think are applicable to enough customers. We removed the note. Thank you for your feedback.
Hi, question: what is the 'revert' option upon there is any need to revert the SP4 installation to the previous version. Current version/patch in my environment is SP3. Cheers
melvynt,
I need to clarify your question. Are you asking how to revert to the previous version?
Thank you!

Hi Ed,
Just want to check if its ok to upgrade SQL Server 2005 from SP3 to SP4 for MOSS 2007 and MS CRM Dynamics 4.0 application server?
What isn't specified is that the Service Pack requires that the SQL Server Browser service is started. As part of the security reccomendations this service is Stopped and Disabled on our environments. And the errors logged were not helpful at all either.
All sorted though. After starting the Browser the Service Pack installed.
