    The discussion about first significant programming language is interesting. The language is less important than the reason. I got to do interesting work on thermodynamics with software when starting out for which I'm thankful. Software is just a tool.

    The amount of pain that’s been inflicted by the overeager adoption of microservices is immense.

    For the record, at Uber, we're moving many of our microservices to what calls macroservices (wells-sized services). Exactly b/c testing and maintaining thousands of microservices is not only hard - it can cause more trouble long-term than it solves the short-term.

    Nice analysis of SSL's performance impact in Java Applications ( using Netty). JDK SSL engine adds a lot of overhead. OpenSLL native library has a much lower throughput penalty. Via Nico Kruber. Kudos to for the work on Netty.

    I hadn't heard that suggested before, but it sounds quite pragmatic for large C++ projects -- tons of tiny files is a disease.

    That's why I recommend minimum source-file sizes. The rules are easy to understand, easy to enforce, and guaranteed to slow the quadratic curve of increasing build times.
