    35 USC 3142(i)(4) is clear that federal magistrate judges can order temporary release of anyone detained for any "compelling reason." It's an ongoing burden that MJs bear, often forcing them to re-evaluate earlier orders on imperfect information.

    Judge Fogel is exactly right. A crisis is a terrible thing to waste. Done right, we can get 50 years of federal court transparency reforms done in the next five months.

    I had the exact same question. As usual, Mark got to it first.

    Hey did you really intend to ban anyone from going outside, walking their dog, or going for a hike? Because that’s what the literal text of your order does. Why not adopt the more reasonable approach eight Bay Area counties have taken rather than preempt it?

    The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales has told all judges that they will be using technology to conduct business which even a month ago would have been unthinkable.  Final hearings and hearings with contested evidence very shortly will be conducted using technology (THREAD)
