    Efforts to codify the redefinition have failed to move forward twice in Congress due to strong opposition & First Amendment concerns. Trump bypassed Congress in Dec. by issuing an order requiring consideration of the definition in federal investigations.

    Florida’s antisemitism redefinition law, passed in 2019 and modeled on the IHRA definition, is the most repressive measure enacted so far in the U.S. It includes “focusing peace or human rights investigations only on Israel” as an example of antisemitism.

    Israel advocates have escalated a push for governments, universities and social media companies to adopt this distorted definition. This politically motivated redefinition effort has been widely used to silence advocacy for Palestinian freedom.

    The State Dept. appears to rely on the flawed IHRA definition of antisemitism, which deceptively labels common criticisms of Israel as discrimination against Jewish people. 7 out of 11 examples of contemporary antisemitism in the IHRA definition focus on criticism of Israel.

    The State Department cannot write off prominent human rights organizations for supporting rights for Palestinians, too. Sign the petition and tell the Department to revise its weaponized definition of antisemitism.
