    We were proper web citizens and feature detected `()` but our website completely broke in Safari 14.1 because it started using the new shipped API. The tab just instantly crashes. Looks like we have to specifically detect Safari 14.1 now. 😔

    Looks like this crash was fixed in a commit in January. See: But they still shipped the version that crashes the whole tab with a null pointer exception in Safari 14.1. This should have been fixed before release.

    This is only true because Apple prevents other vendors from bringing the modern, secure engines they ship to *every other OS* to iOS.

    A clearer way to say what he's saying is: On iOS, third-party browsers are actually Safari under-the-hood. They're essentially thin "skins" on top of a Safari WebView. The underlying HTML, CSS, JS renderer technology comes from Safari, even if it looks like you're using Brave.

    To repeat: the problem isn't Safari, it's iOS and App Store policies that have cut off real browser competition at the knees. No iOS user is ever allowed better than the lowest-common-denominator web, and that's *terrible* for developers and users alike.

    It can't be said often enough that Apple's vexatious App Store policies wouldn't be a crisis for either developers _or_ for Apple if they made or allowed a modern browser for iOS.
