    I’ve genuinely felt this to be an important personal moral principle since I first learned about it at university/college.

    "Be careful with what you impose on others, and be liberal in what you accept from others" is a good principle for humans too, not just computers

    Doing open source without involving money both avoids a bunch of problems and creates others. There’s trade-offs with both approaches but one path is much better trodden than the other. Let’s avoid the simple “if only maintainers were paid!” takes. It’s not that simple.

    Hombrew gets a lot unfair criticism for changing /usr/local/bin permissions It's a perfectly reasonable choice of trust model, it's just unfortunate that sometimes it clashes with other software's assumptions Can't really blame either side for integration issues 🤷🏻‍♂️

    For bonus points: create a separate email account for your open source projects with Too Many Notifications (cough ) and get all your notifications there. This allows you to similarly enforce “work-life balance” with open source too 💖

    PSA: sick of getting notifications about work repos on your personal e-mail account? You can route those emails to your work e-mail address instead! Only took me a decade to think to look for this setting, glad it exists!

    Want to make a bot for every open source project that looks for “it would be trivial to” in an issue, autocloses it and tells the person to open a pull request instead. Fun fact: if it would be a huge improvement AND trivial to implement then it would be done already.

    It’s genuinely terrifying how many people I see considering moving to ARM cloud servers because it’ll make using Docker easier on new ARM macs. This is not a good reason to move your production environments.
