We're looking for a startup that wants to try switching entirely to Codespaces (off local development). Benefits are faster setup, better performance, standardized environments, and better security. Ideally 10+ developers, already using GitHub and VS Code. DM me if interested!

I’ve genuinely felt this to be an important personal moral principle since I first learned about it at university/college.

Doing open source without involving money both avoids a bunch of problems and creates others. There’s trade-offs with both approaches but one path is much better trodden than the other. Let’s avoid the simple “if only maintainers were paid!” takes. It’s not that simple.

I (genuinely) love pragmatic security engineers:

For bonus points: create a separate email account for your open source projects with Too Many Notifications (cough ) and get all your notifications there. This allows you to similarly enforce “work-life balance” with open source too 💖

Want to make a bot for every open source project that looks for “it would be trivial to” in an issue, autocloses it and tells the person to open a pull request instead. Fun fact: if it would be a huge improvement AND trivial to implement then it would be done already.

The one thing about Hacker News I want for pretty much every site I use. It’s fairly trivial to workaround (open a private tab) but there’s something about it that makes me just close the tab and get on with something better.

What are your favourite technical books that you go back to again and again? Here’s my minimal bookshelf. Shout out the lovely and who I’m lucky enough to know in person.

Thanks so much to and the other contributors to . I don’t think I’d have been able to either get promoted to or figure out my role as a staff engineer at GitHub without it. Invaluable resource.

Today I’d like to announce Homebrew 3.0.0. The most significant changes since 2.7.0 are official Apple Silicon support and a new bottle format in formulae.

A “remote job” seems to mean very different things. I wish there was some standardisation on e.g. job postings (sometimes even internal ones!) on what’s expected of the employee:

I’m not down on ARM in the cloud/server: maybe it’s good move! I am down on the idea of “let’s fiddle with our servers because of our current local development workflow”

It’s genuinely terrifying how many people I see considering moving to ARM cloud servers because it’ll make using Docker easier on new ARM macs. This is not a good reason to move your production environments.
