It feels like the decay of the web fuels the rise of newletters. Emails load fast, with zero JavaScript and reasonable privacy. It’s like a push version of Web 1.0.

whenever a design decision seems really stupid I experience anxiety and have to calm myself down by repeating the mantra 'there is a use case which necessitates this design which I haven't considered'

The longer I work at a startup, the more that the idea of working for a corporation gives me shivers. But I like that Tyler Cowen is currently making a case for them when the consensus seems to be a little too strongly against them

Forget price hikes, why is coco-quench ON SALE? 40% off! My usual response it to buy the whole lot, but now people will think I’m panic-buying. I’m really just normal-buying, I promise!

When listening to a podcast about a recently released book, I feel the same way towards the book as I do towards a prequel series. Things are being debated in the podcast that aren't covered in the book, making it feel a little underdeveloped. Hard to then justify reading it

Great article by , it's encouraging to see a blog with programmery and philosophical posts side by side. One day I might de-anonymise my non-coding posts as well (currently slightly paranoid at how the tech community treats certain viewpoints)

Thinking about selection bias does wonders for mediating surprise levels. I might think 'I'm surprised that this online book is free' but my next thought is 'of course it's free! otherwise my friend would have linked me another one that _was_ free on the same topic'

Is there a website I can go to where I can read through an archive of private conversations? Even if it's in the form of old letters between people? I feel like such a website should exist but I can't find one (assuming everything was sourced ethically of course)

Just occurred to me that it's spring in the US and Wuhan, which is when you would expect viruses to be a bigger threat. Australia's in autumn right now so perhaps the risk is overstated here, for geographical reasons? Is that how it works?

Most arguments about abstraction in software development, which includes 'the wrong abstraction', can be analogised to early specialisation in education. But I'm a fan of early specialisation, and have grown cautious about the wrong abstraction, so cognitive dissonance is at play

I feel deep admiration when I see the owner of an open source repo push back against the popular demands of the community. Chances are the community is right, but I still admire the skill of saying 'no'

I don't even blame youtube or the people who upload the videos, it's just a shame that they appeal to our baser instincts and that in turn feeds the algorithms to serve us more clickbaity advice videos that pull us away from our original goals.
