The digital inclusion paradox means poorer, less literate users are likely to be more at risk of data exploitation and abuses - ie if data is like oil, it is oil that pollutes, and the vulnerable are most at risk - @zeynep (this echoes @RIAnetwork research in Africa!) #Rightscon

Wow! A great speech from @zeynep at #RightsCon. A message of hope: just like we aren't responsible for testing our food for poison or making sure our car breaks work, regulation can help us in the digital sphere. Those problems seemed very hard at the time, but we can do it!

Even if you opt out they will figure out who you are through your networks and inferences about you. We need collective rights. Individual empowerment is not enough @zeynep #datarights #Rightscon

"Give us the regulation so we can have the innovation", says @zeynep in convo w/ @martintisne abt bill of data rights. So nice to hear regulation and innovation associated this way in a sentence! #RightsCon pic.twitter.com/MHLkRWc9zL

At #RightsCon went to a panel on how the US shouldn't carry out regime change (true!) but only the Tunisian speaker discussed economic issues. Made me realize there are few international conferences to talk about socialism.

Notes from #RightsCon : funny how the Global North conversation is government vs corporation (usually big tech) with the govt regulators as the heroes. The Global South conversation is govt regulators vs people with big tech being used to get around govt.

#RightsCon reminder. Facial recognition and (digital identity in general) are very dangerous tech. Passwords can be changed but faces and fingerprints CAN’T. We need to talk about this.
Also, don’t take pics of others’ faces without consent.
Also, I designed this sticker 🙃 pic.twitter.com/0hnFT9hr8W

Thank you to everybody who came to our 9am panel the morning after the official #RightsCon party...to solve an equation! Always fun to get together with @inlucc, the city of Manouba and @MagentaSBCC to discuss how behavioral science and digital tools can improve local governance. pic.twitter.com/KVgFxqBxAA

Post-#RightsCon thought: if this summit taught me one crucial skill, it’s how to make efficient use of every single second of the day. It was/always is totally non-stop!
