I'm not underrepresented anymore. Y'all are over-represented. Not going to use a negative to describe my existence. I'm Bryan, and I'm supposed to be here.

Way too often does the voice of the the over represented drown out out the nuance of things they don't care to see. *You* may not have needed a degree, but everyone isn't so lucky. I wish y'all were this assertive in support of prosecution of Breonna Taylor's killers.

What's a good piece of advice that you can offer as lyrics from a song? I have a few: Goodie Mobb: "Listen to me now, believe me later on" Big: "Our situation is a tight one, what you gonna do? Fight or run" Jay Z: "Difficult takes a day. Impossible takes a week"

I have little hope for systemic racism being tackled in my lifetime. People are having a hard enough time wearing masks in stores and staying home so they don't the Rona. There's no way we could do something like fix racism.

First thing: understand there will always be stress. Second: decide what is important and don’t let the other stuff bother you. Third: realize that most problems aren’t that serious and solve them at calm level.

Had a chance to spend some time with this morning. Every time I talk to her, I leave the conversation feeling like a superhero and full of hope.

I've been having problems with my home lab recently. I debugged, pulled my hair out, reinstalled things multiple times, and put in more metrics and automation. The problem was DNS. 26 years doing computers for 💰, and I forgot the golden rule of computers: "It's always DNS"

You can’t stop racism yourself. What can you do beyond some shallow tech renaming project? Admit to yourself that you have benefited, direct or indirectly, from systemic racism. Going forward, reject cases where you directly or indirectly benefit from systemic racism.

Often career advice, although coming from a good place, is not helpful or ends up being wrong. So don’t ask for advice. Instead what the person expected, what happened, and how they felt about it. Use that when reconciling your thoughts rather than the advice itself.

In software, often times, it's easier to expose new features than remove existing features. This means when we are creating products, we should expose fewer features initially. Expose additional features progressively as you and your users become more comfortable with the space.

When solving a big problem, you're likely going to need a vision, one or more strategies, and tactics for those strategies. Ensured ways to fail include: * Not having a vision * Confusing strategy with tactics * Thinking you don't need a vision, strategy, or tactics.

Almost 100% of my career has been spite-driven. Nothing gives me more satisfaction and drive than doing something that I was supposedly not qualified to do.

When it comes to your career, there is no winning. It isn’t zero sum. There is only a goal of continuous improvement. You can get bonus points if you help other continuously improve as well.

I get more satisfaction reading history of ethnicities, business theory or physics books than science fiction. There is no single mold for what is enjoyable by people in tech.

Heard this last night: “Intelligence is only energy. You have to focus that energy into things that generate impact.” Your individual intelligence is irrelevant, instead, it’s how you affect the whole.

It's common for so-called backend devs to look down on front end devs. I don't understand this. A browser is its own operating system. You have to support multiple OSs with an untyped LISP and be somewhat performant at the same time. Front end dev is most definitely real dev.

I was never a great patch cable person, but there is now order instead of chaos. Also added two servers. Didn’t do rack mounts, but there is lots of cores and memory to play with.
